The Pear Tree Review

First impressions count for a great deal. They can mean the difference between being perceived as welcoming or rude; friendly or frightening; charming or vulgar. They count for a lot and a person or place can't help but make one. Some circles believe trusting your instincts, that gut feeling, and relying on your first impression is the sensible thing to do - while for others; not to judge a book by its cover and second chances are the mantra of choice. As an open minded fellow, I like to think that my stance is that of the latter, and I’m often glad of it, especially when visiting places to dine.

My first impression of The Pear Tree was altogether underwhelming. Hopping off the tube at Baron's Court, I followed a map down the main road, past a cemetery, via a hospital and through a quiet suburban residence. To say that The Pear Tree is out of the way or off the beaten track is an understatement, though at this point I was yet to discover the trek would be well worth it. An unassuming little red-brick venue, this pub welcomes you with all the understated grandeur one comes to expect from period public houses. A roaring fire, a dark wood bar and intimate booths at which to dine. My booth came with tartan woollen blankets draped across the seats - the pub certainly gives the impression of being a place to cosily nest of an evening, away from the harsh British winter.

A group of inebriated locals propped up the bar, chatting and chortling to each other and the barmaid. It's a heart-warming sight to see, especially when faced with gloomy facts about British pubs closures. However, the locals should be warned to expect an influx of foodies; The Pear Tree is now under new management. New management ordinarily means a new chef and that's exactly the case here. While the chef's menu is by no means revolutionary, it is conceptual in terms of ingredients and the dishes on offer. A blackboard proudly stands at the entrance of the pub and is testament to the daily-changing menu (the majority of the ingredients being sourced from a local market guaranteeing freshness and a degree of poetic licence in terms of the food offerings, something sorely missed from other such pubs).

I also had a lovely chat with the new proprietors of the venue, who also owns the 1920's-themed Betty Blythe tea rooms (well worth a visit if you find yourself in W14 of an afternoon), who are keen to retain the traditional cosy feel of the venue whilst broadening it's appeal to those further afield.

The food here is without frills and delivers in terms of taste and the all-important comfort factor. I dined on soup of the day, a creamy vegetable dish which warmed the cockles, and a fish main served with fresh vegetables. Both courses were delicious and perfectly in keeping with the demeanour of the pub. In terms of drink, there are all the usual beers, on tap and bottled, and familiar spirits available. My only gripe would be with the seemingly stunted wine list. A list implies a long selection of carefully considered additions to enhance the dining experience; a choice of 3 whites, 3 reds and couple of bottles of fizz, does not a wine list make - publicans take note!

The Pear Tree isn't going to change to the world or set gastronomic circles alight with excitement. What it is going to do is to make people reconsider their first impressions when they walk past a quaint little boozer they hadn’t noticed before. Next time you are passing by what may seem to be just another pub, I urge you to walk in and sample it's delights. If The Pear Tree is anything to go by, I'd be happy to wager that you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Hated

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
