The Gate Review

“It will be full of sandal wearing hippies” scoffs my carnivorous friend as we walk away from the hub of Hammersmith towards a desolate council estate. But there is not a sandal in sight as we enter the Gate Vegetarian Restaurant. Set in a large converted church hall, the décor is simple and discreet (a large black and white picture dominates the far end of the room, and a wild green plant the other).

People are tucking into healthy portions of vegetables and pulses, without, I presume, any guilt. Well that is certainly how I feel when ordering my third course. I deserve the lashings of cream on my rhubarb and ginger crumble (5 pounds), after eating as many vegetables in one sitting as I have in the past month. The restaurant is packed (even on a Tuesday), but though everyone is chatting animately, it is not noisy.

We sit next to an enormous window (when light pours through in the summer it must be wonderful) and choose an organic white wine (from £15 a bottle). Though he smirks at the ‘organic’ idea, my friend (reluctantly) admits that it is very good. We also try a strawberry, mint and orange juice – delicious and very fresh.

For a starter I have a beautifully presented pancake filled with cauliflower and lentils (£5.50). It is good but my friend’s artichoke salad (£5.50) is even better. I manage to grab one artichoke before he wolfs it all down. For an ‘anti-veggie’ he is doing a good job of disguising it.

For my main course I go for a Thai salad. Pak choi, bean sprouts, mouli, green mango, babycorn, coriander and mint are tossed in a Thai dressing and scattered with crushed peanuts (£10.00) – so experimental and so delicious. Even my friends pasta (£10.00) is sparked up into a vegetably delight. (There is a new pasta every day).

My friend is proof that the Gate Vegetarian restaurant is not just for vegan/vegetarian new-agers. He does not miss meat one bit – and it would be impossible to. Indeed the food (which quite justifiably steals the limelight in this review) is exceptional by anyone’s standards.

Three course meal for two with wine: about £30 per person.

“This is quite a unique restaurant experience due to the vegetarian menu (unfortunately rare in London) and the building itself. Great huge window/source of natural light. The food is outstanding. I recommend the Cajun aubergine. Slightly disappointed by the service. Was told on the phone that they couldn't fit us in at 7.30pm so we got a 7pm sitting instead. Turned up 10 minutes late and it was empty, but we were semi told off by the waitress ("We've been waiting for you"). The tables and chairs are a bit low rent too and there's far too many of them in there. Take them out!”

“Amazing restaurant, delicious food (roasted almond and cauliflower korma is my personal favourite!) great atmosphere! Look for The Gate in Hammersmith, hidden in the churchyard off Hammersmith Apollo. So worth it.”
