The Bridge Pub & Dining Room Review

What a transformation The Bridge has had. Before the refit at the end of 2002 this was the kind of pub you'd probably want to avoid, even though it's well positioned on the south side of Hammersmith Bridge.

If curiosity had taken over, you would have had to fight your way through the underage drinkers parked on their bmx's outside the entrance, before being confronted by wanna be thugs parading round the pool table.

No fear, all that has changed. Now a self described 'pub and dining rooms', The Bridge has opted for the clientel one would normally associate with this area of London, being on the perimeter of Barnes, and they've done a superb job. A long bar greets you that leads into a conservatory where the dining rooms are. With low lighting and an abundance of plants, a congenial atmosphere has been created that romance seeking couples and groups of friends would both enjoy.

Lunch, dinner, weekend brunch and Sunday roast are all available at restaurant prices. The evening menu is very gastroish with a main course such as 'Char-grilled rib eye, smashed baby spud and sprouts, sweet gerlot onion salsa verde' setting you back £12.90 and a starter 'wok-tossed mussels, lemon, thyme, Chardonnay & herbs' costing £5.30. Maybe a little pricy for a pub but hey we forgot, this isn't just any old pub, The Bridge is a 'pub and dinning rooms'.

NB Recently returned to The Bridge and was pleased to see the bar bustling with people and activity, the atmosphere and ambience of The Bridge has matured perfectly and if you need some advice on wines Murry is the man, his knowledge and recommendation was spot on.

If you like The Bridge Pub & Dining Room you'll love the other two venues this team run in Hammersmith: The Hit Bar & Restaurant on the Broadway and The Odd Spot Cafe opposite the Riverside Studios. more

“The menu, having been beautifully-evolved by an Italian chef called Diego, has picked up again, and found its feet. There is a balance between the pleasurable, carb-loaded dishes and the lighter touch that eluded it in the wayward period in between. The service is generally excellent, though can be variable depending on who you get at your table. There are a few dizzy waitresses from clearly supportive families who aren't really focused on refining the job, merely just doing it in a way they see fit, and that can let other areas down. However, in general it is incredibly friendly, and the pub quiz on a Wednesday is worth the occasional look-in too: entertaining and nicely competitive (except for one team, who were just too up themselves when I last did it a couple of weeks ago!). The pub does lots of deals to bring in the punters, and really seems to want to create a community feel. I am sorry for Joanna in her review, as I can see that it might happen on a very off day, but really surprised at k.d's comments, as that certainly isn't how the place is now. What I would say, having gone there 7 or 8 times since February, is that it is, on the whole, an excellent experience.”

“The food was excellent, felt very welcome. I don't know what k.d and Joanna are talking about!! It was 2 years ago, mind... Our food came quickly as did our drinks. I felt the staff were very well trained and we were shown to our seats and the manager was at our beck and call.”

“The problem with this place is that you get charged service fees- the waiters never see that if its put on your credit card. The staff arent trained, and the managers never make a point of making their staff feel welcome, so its not like the staff are going to make you feel anymore special! All just as impersonal. They overemphasize their potential without actually pulling it off. They want to have fresh juice, but that adds an extra 30minutes to someone's Bloody Mary, while all you want is a Cold Beer. Its just not worth it there.”

“Just had a terrible experience in the Bridge. It's a lovely space but the service was appalling. First the manager didn't show us to our table; just waved in the general direction of where he wanted us to sit. After waiting for 45 minutes following ordering my partner asked for an update on when our food was coming. After ten minutes no one had bothered coming to speak to us; so I enquired again. Finally we were told our waitress had forgotten to give our order to the chef. What annoyed us was not that the waitress had forgotten - these things do happen; it was that no one had bothered to communicate with us and we had to chase and chase them. Finally to add insult to injury we were not even offered a complimentary meal or even a complimentary drink! I have rarely encountered such poor service and it's a shame because it is a lovely pub to be inside. Very disappointed.”

“Went there for lunch with family on Sunday. Paid £20 each for 4 courses including an aperitif. The food was excellent, really good roast lunch (which are frequently disappointing when mass-catered) and the service was friendly and attentive. Would highly recommend it.”

“For what it is, this a very good restaurant pub. Have been pleasantly surprised by the food quality on a number of occasions. Service has been perfectly pleasant. Lots of space for children. The only downside is that it is now becoming so popular I have to make reservations.”

“The Bridge could be a great gastro pub, but despite a great garden and a nice sized bar, it's let down by erratic service, poor food and just plain incompetence. Living a short walk away, we try and convince ourselves that our next visit will be different, but we always leave vowing never to return. Orders are frequently forgotten or messed up - we've waited over an hour for a burger and a salad only to send it back because it had more grissle than meat. Other times, a dish has just failed to materialise, so we have a group of people eating and one member of the party with nothing to eat. The staff are aplogogetic, but this place is quite frankly a joke - it's as though they enmpluy monkeys in the kitchen as opposed to chefs. We even waited over an hour once for our bill! If ever there was a place ripe for an appearance on Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, this is it. This place is catastophic! Eat there at your peril - it's not even good value for money...”

“Bit smokey in the pub part (even when not busy). Could do with some decent extractor fans. However head straight for the dining room and enjoy. Magnificent food with flair. Pleasant staff. Can't speak highly enough of this place. Surf and Turf is a winner.”

“The Bridge has all you could ask for and a little bit more for your local pub. They have created a warm inviting atmosphere with comfortable tables and sofa's and a separate dining room restaurant that is non smoking and intimate. The staff are always friendly and approachable and the food is focused on fresh modern cuisine. They have a remarkable wine list that has many good quality new and old wine at a competitve price. They have a great deal on Tuesday's nights with their mussel madness and i recommend you pop in for the Thai green curry!! The Bridge is a perfect place to pass the time on those cold winter nights.”

“Brilliant! There are very few pubs that manage to get away with what the Bridge has. The food is great and varied, served on time and hot. The beer is cold and their is a great selection of wine, served by friendly staff. I was especially pleased with a young lad named Rob who was both charming and helpfull. The whole thing led to a great evening. Well done the Bridge.”

“Basic but modernised large pub with a good variation of seating choices (from booths and barstools to tables and back garden) and a better selection of yummy food.”

“The menu at The Bridge changes monthly, and the chef, Sarah Pope tries to maintain a seasonal feel to the menu. Good examples currently include Risotto Primavera with freshly shelled peas and asparagus, Conchiglie Pasta with broccoli, pine nuts, currants and parmesan, an excellent Brill with steamed green top carrots, potato rosti, asparagus, tomato and thyme dressing as well as Cote de Boeuf (Irish beef on the bone), Oven Baked Quail, and of course the desserts are not to be missed. Add to this a good selection of New and Old World wines and cocktails that will challenge the quality of many a West End Bar, this place looks set to continue it's success in Barnes. An al-fresco restaurant is planned for the summer in the spacious garden. Watch this space!!!”

“Went last Saturday night (18/01/03) for the first and very impressed. After being past the old pub many times to/from work without ever wanting to go in it shows what a great job they've done on it. Nice relaxing and warm atmosphere, very friendly staff and a good mix of people. Food was good if a bit limited. If you have a chance try their rib eye steak with nut dumplings - I didn't have it but after tasting a friends I wished I had. A great addition to Barnes !!”

“We popped in for a meal on Saturday night and were very pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent - comprising good ingredients and and skillfully brought togther in the compact kitchen behind the bar to form dishes normally only seen in quality restaurants. The staff were both attentive and friendly and the wines fine. Perhaps an ideal venue for a pre- night out drink - with the t only downside being you may spend all night here. Well recommended.”

“this place is good! took a girlfriend there on a sunday afternoon date and we had a really cool time. food is very good (mixture of roasts and modern bar stuff e.g. tuna steak burger / 'funky' fishfingers). wine list is also of high standard and they serve some great bitters / beers as well. there's a dining area with very nice solid oak type types: good to have food at but not necessarily drink at. after we had lunch we retired to the fir place area where there are some great leather sofas - prefect on a cold winters day! i'd go back!”
