The Distillers Review

We are all taught to find our niche; play to our strengths and don’t try to be something we’re not. If you’re a dour Scotsman with the likeability factor of a wasp, maybe don’t run for Prime Minister. Or if you have a 2:1 in history – perhaps aiming for the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer is a bit of a stretch.

Sorry, where was I? We all have to accept that there are some things we will never be. And just as I am never going to be a professional singer (my grandmother once said to me: “Darling, if you ever meet a nice man – please don’t sing in front of him.”) The Distillers in Hammersmith is never going to be a top-notch fine-dining venue. A decent place to grab a pint, listen to some music and devour some pub-grub? Yes. The perfect place to wine and dine your other half or impress out of town guests? Not so much.

The self-proclaimed ‘gastro pub’ is located a stone’s throw from Hammersmith underground and, both inside and out, resembles a fairly standard city pub. Some might describe the interior as shabby-chic. Others might leave out the ‘chic’ part.

Upon our arrival, I approached the staff who were milling around behind the downstairs bar and explained who I was and that I was here for dinner. I was met with several blank stares before one (slightly surly) member of staff pointed me through a doorway and up a set of stairs to what I presumed would be a restaurant.

My guest and I entered a small attic-style room filled with a handful of people setting up musical equipment, speakers etc. I explained to another member of staff who I was and she asked if I was here to have a look round. “No,” I explained. “I’m here for dinner and I think that that table – the one with the A4 piece of paper with my name on – is where I am supposed to sit.” She looked bemused, and I felt the same way, but nevertheless my friend and I took our seats. And waited. And waited. There was no one else in the room aside from the staff, who were casting confused glances at my friend and I, as we squirmed awkwardly in our seats. After roughly 15 minutes, someone asked if we were OK – and I asked if it would be possible to maybe have some menus? Ahh, menus. Yes.
Menus arrived yet still, no one really seemed to know what was going on (and I was beginning to feel a bit daft). Eventually, just as I had caught the attention of what turned out to be the entertainment manager, the actual manager rushed over, looking slightly panicked, to rescue us. Phew.

Mr. Manager explained that we would be treated to a three-course meal whilst enjoying some live music – and that tonight was the final of a battle of the bands night that had been running for the best part of a year. Mr. Manager then grabbed us a couple of glasses of Prosecco and appointed one of his waitresses to look after us for the evening and I got the feeling that, despite a slightly shaky start, the night was going to get better.

Our waitress came over to take our order and, having been slightly baffled by the layout of the menu – which didn’t appear to distinguish between starters and mains – I asked her to clarify which were the starters? The potted shrimp, soup and, mussels – she replied. Ahh, so the mussels are a starter? “Well, they’re quite big and served with chips, so...” My dining partner and I plumped for the aforementioned potted shrimp and a meat, bread and cheese platter (listed, curiously, as a side-dish). Both were decent portions and well presented.

For our mains my dining buddy opted for burger and chips and I went for the mussels. Again, both were fairly hefty portions and looked delicious. Unfortunately the mussels were freezing – to the extent that I questioned if they were meant to be served cold. Cue an embarrassing and awkward situation involving a very angry manager and very sheepish waitress. Granted, when the food arrived, and was served at the correct temperature, it tasted good.

The live music was fairly standard – if not a little odd. The acts that were performing had won their ‘round’ earlier in the year and were back to compete in the final. Some of the acts were actually rather enjoyable; others were slightly more ‘unique’. At one point I snuck off to the bathroom only to overhear one such competitor singing and practising guitar in a cubicle. The words ‘twilight’ and ‘zone’ sprung to mind.

The Distillers, in my humble opinion, needs to decide what it is – a gastro pub, a decent boozer and place to watch the fitba’ or a well-established live music venue. It can be, I think, two of the above but, at the moment, they are spreading themselves far too thinly. more

“Good tunes, loads of space (both indoor and outdoor), good decent selection of beers, chirpy service, fairly close proximity to the tube, better than all the other pubs in the vicinity, and the crowd is young and up for the craic. Much better than its sister pub in the City of London.”

“I totally disagree with Sophie, she must have gone to a different pub! I've been going here on and off for the last few years and have never experienced anything like she has. Regarding the music was she expecting the Apollo? That's round the corner. This is a local pub that caters for the those that work and live nearby fantastically. It's generally full most days of the week - does that not speak volumes. Very disappointed with her opinion, would have thought better of Fluid.”

“Nice pub with good atmosphere and lovely new garden area, with a bit of shelter and heaters. But they seem to spend an age serving you! Observation: if the pub is going to serve food, then have waiters specifically for that role and don't use the bar staff....”

“Atmosphere is good, but mainly made by the outside smoking area. Football was on last night, but thankfully not taking over the pub, just in one corner. Had the sausage & mash which was ok but not great and at almost a tenner i felt a little disappointed - burger & chips looked better on reflection.”

“This has been my local boozer for a while and its a good pub to have. Staff are friendly, atmosphere is jovial and the garden is great in the summer time.”
