The Guard House Review

Top 10 things you need to know about The Guard House:

1) Ever questioned if you should venture out to Woolwich Arsenal? Well, you definitely should. Not least so you can tuck into top-notch pub food. Good stuff!

2) Chilled vibes? Then quieter weeknights are definitely your thing. But if you prefer a bit of life, head over during the weekend when it’s packed out for lazy, hangover brunches and hearty Sunday roasts.

3) You’re greeted on arrival by two Great Dane statues, a sun-trapping terrace and a colourful-chic interior complete with portraits of man’s best friend. It must be love! And oh, how about that mouth-watering smell seducing your nostrils from the open kitchen, teasing your grumbling stomach.

4) Don’t be shy; take advantage of the staff’s knowledge. Ask what they recommend to eat, ask what wine to pair with your food, or ask who won the Grand National in 1968 – they seem to know everything!

5) The pub sources as much food from around the nearby area as possible, and you’ll also find a seasonal board offering locally-brewed beers. They design their own cocktails as well. Try the highly recommended coconut mojito: yum!

6) Hard decision, but choose the wild boar terrine to start. Feel unsettled by the last-minute choice to resist the baked Camembert with truffle oil soldiers. There’s always next time. It’s heading into winter anyway and must be time to start piling on some extra insulation soon.

7) For the main event, pick out one of the daily-changing, seasonal fish specials such as the recommended salmon pie. All right then! And when it arrives looking all Instagram-worthy, topped with fresh mussels and sprigs of tenderstem broccoli, start to feel a little bit fancy.

8) Once the mains are demolished, you scan the dessert menu and instantly your eyes fall on the chocolate fondant with salted caramel ice cream, or crème fraiche ice cream, if they’ve run out (must be popular). It’s gooey and gloriously rich, so naturally your inner chocolate demon will be satisfied. Be gone, demon!

9) Time to settle the bill. Your three-course meal doesn’t come too cheap, but you can’t fault the food or the super-friendly staff who make it all well worth your excursion out to Woolwich.

10) Not ready to go home? Sip on another pint and unleash your wicked side with a round of Cards Against Humanity in The Mess bar.
