The Cutty Sark - Youngs Review

Book a table at The Cutty Sark - Youngs

Best for: lamb breast croquettes.

Great: views across the Thames.

Let me clear one thing up from the offset: the Cutty Sark Tavern isn’t actually located on the Cutty Sark boat.

I discovered this by accident. In Greenwich I am as much of a tourist as the couple speaking Spanish with a map outstretched in front of them who I nearly asked for directions. When I was told I would be going to the Cutty Sark pub for dinner and drinks, I automatically headed straight for the famous British boat.

I turned up at the tea clipper boat, circled it twice, expecting to see the pub up on deck. Nothing. Confusingly, the Cutty Sark boat isn’t as close to the boat as you’d imagine. No, the Cutty Sark Tavern is actually located about an eight-minute walk away, a short walk along the windy river front that leads to a quaint Georgian freehouse.

But for all the walking and getting lost, just sitting upstairs in the pub by the window is almost like being on the actual ship. The views are fantastic; from our table on the second floor by a large window, we looked out across the water to Canary Wharf and the O2 dome, and as the day slowly faded to night, lights twinkled on independently like stars waking up in the sky.

Although we weren’t sitting on the clipper, the Cutty Sark Tavern included so many nautical items – customised barrels to sit on and ships wheels on the walls – that it was easy to feel an affinity with the vessel that the pub took its name from.

We visited on a particularly cold, grey day. The walk along the river front had made our fingers blue and we flew through the pub doors, blowing on our hands and stamping our feet. Thankfully, we didn’t have to brace the winds from the deck or freeze below in cabin quarters. Recently redecorated, the pub is cosy and welcoming, with exposed beams, winding staircases and fires crackling in hearths on each of its three floors.

The only thing I could possibly order aboard this charming tavern: the Billingsgate fish stew, a dish sitting proudly on the specials menu. But before I could dig into my fishy main, I had my starter to contend with.

The starter, for me, was the stand out dish of the visit: lamb breast croquettes with yoghurt, pickled cucumber and mint. The fluffy meaty pillows were brought to life by the unusual tart cucumber, and if I’d left after this dish I would have left a happy girl.

And perhaps I should have left after the lamb croquettes, because what came next was more salty sea dog than I’d have liked. The fish stew contained undercooked potatoes, one lone scallop, and mussels that weren’t cleaned properly of grit.

From the shining beacon of the starter, the main course was a disappointment. We ordered a side order of parmesan fries that were exactly that: little slivers of fried chips with a sprinkling of parmesan over the top. Nothing more, nothing less.

Regardless of the miss with the main course, it’s obvious why locals flock from Greenwich to sit in the Cutty Sark Tavern. Sitting in front of one of the wide windows in a cosy chair with one of the ales on offer, it feels like a secret smugglers cove. All you need to do is clink your glasses, sing a couple of sea shanties, and order platefuls of lamb breast croquettes for a successful journey aboard the Cutty Sark Tavern.

“For me it is almost an obligation to eat at Cutty Shark when I am around Greenwich. My first visit there was in 1992 and I always go back with my friends, sitting by the windows watching the Thames flow by. (Para mi es una visita obligada comer aqui cuando visito Greenwich, lo conocí por primera vez en 1992 y cada vez que vuelvo con amigos vamos a comer sentados al lado del ventanal sobre el rio Tamesis, este septiembre 2007 voy a volver.) One of the best places I have ever seen, the walk from Cutty Shark tube station is worth it, definitely next september I will be there again for lunch with friends. After the coffee.... go to the observatory through the park.... really nice.”
