The White Horse Review

The White Horse is featured in these Guides:

Best for: beers of all shapes and sizes.

Great: atmosphere and pub food in west London.

In this age of alienation, doubt and general uncertainty, Benjamin Franklin’s quip about “death and taxes” seems particularly apt. But would it be amiss to add a third, cheerier item to the list of ever-present certainties in life: namely, beer?

People like beer. This much is fairly uncontroversial. Some enterprising publicans have picked up on this trend and made a decent business out of it, and at this late stage it’s only minor things like government regulations and pesky self-restraint that are stopping Messrs’ Heineken and Busch from seizing absolute world domination, possibly in a coalition with coffee outlets.

The White Horse pub in Parsons Green is proof of this reassuringly fundamental axiom. Not only has it been going strong for several centuries, but from my newcomer perspective of the area it appeared to be the very cornerstone of the main street, looking out onto the Green itself.

This status is no doubt linked to the bar’s formidable list of beers, which stretches into the hundreds. Even the most jaded of hop-gobblers will find something new and intriguing among the massed bottles and casks on offer, ranging from amber, blonde, fruit, wheat, Trappist, Buddhist, Taoist, Maoist, porters, stouts to ales from all over the world.

The surroundings – sturdy wooden furniture, roaring fires, stained glass and even an old stable converted into a dining room – seem tailored to complement the bounty of brews, and although no expense has been spared on the lavish gastro-pub menu, each dish may as well be an excuse to match up another far-fetched concoction from the vaults.

Meanwhile, a large BBQ area outside seems primed for lager-fuelled hi-jinks, come summer.

“But hang on, Fergus” I hear you cry. “Surely you’re not even that keen on beer?”. It’s true - I cannot deny that the glamour of the grain has long been withheld from me, and that I generally lean towards cider, wine or (whisper it) cocktails when out and about.

But that was before I was baptised and born again in the foamy font of the White Horse. No watery, mass-produced pint and soggy bar mat for me.

The Devon crab starter was matched with a pineapple-infused Hawaiian chaser, and my stunningly accomplished hanger steak came with a beguilingly odd “Grottenbier” from Belgium.

Professing my ignorance and throwing myself at the mercy of the bar proved to be a good move, as each recommended brew fit the occasion perfectly, leading to an unforgettable meal. By the time I negotiated a fiendishly dark plum porter over steaming apple crumble, I had seen the light, and it was very good.

I was also exceedingly full and sleepy, and had to be shepherded on my way home by the bar staff. But I have not forgotten the epiphany brought on by the hitherto-unsuspected beer-food synergy witnessed that night, and owe a debt of gratitude to the White Horse for converting me to the universal laws of beer.

“Lovely venue on Parsons Green - good food and very versatile depending on the time of year. Will definitely visit again when I'm in the area!”

“Perfect for sunny Sunday afternoon drinks. Even though the outside drinking area out the front is big it gets busy quickly and stays crowded for pretty much the whole day. The usual Parson's Green crowd but good drinks and great position.”

“Ahh, the old Sloany Pony! A fave for the Parsons Green/Fulham crowd, especially for a long, lazy, boozy Sunday lunch! The food is wonderful and good value for money, but the drinks are very overpriced (£5.25 for a glass of Chenin Blanc!) but when you''re chilled out on the sofas or out in the beer "patio" you almost forget. (Yep, the teenage Sloanes do get on your nerves but you can easily ignore them!)”

“Amusing reviews above - obviously the location of this place means that the clientele are of a certain 'ilk'. However, the place does a cracking line of beers, including many belgian classics, a good selection of wines and some very good, if quite pricey food. Warm evenings lead to huge crowds in the beer garden (spilling into the road and onto the 'Green usually), and a very tasty BBQ! A London Classic.”

“one of my favs in this neck of the woods, an absolute cracker. but the white horse is definitely an afternoon pub for me, warning: avoid the 5-7 crowd - a bunch of nobs”

“Strong and strange beers, exotic lager, tasty food. Lots of sexy blonde ladies mixing with wallpaper city men. A fantastic night to be had.”
