The Waterside Review

For a new venue recently opened in the modern Imperial Wharf, The Riverside is suitably refined. Situated on the Thames, the 'pub' has some of the best river views in London and with an extensive alfresco area (seating for 120 people on the river front and a further 80 people to the side) you shouldn't have a problem in appreciating the position. There are outside heaters to keep the chill off and without doubt the Riverside will be popular on sunny days.

The Riverside is a flashy venue and you have to keep pinching yourself that this is a Youngs pub. Although the venue is spanking new, the feel of the place is very homely and welcoming. High ceilings on the ground floor, a large glass front giving the bar a light and airy feel, and a mezzanine restaurant area upstairs that has lovely ecliptic wooden tables and chairs mixed with more relaxed sofas.

On the Saturday evening we visited, a Brazilian / Brit band were playing Jazz Funk inspired by Gilberto Gill - certainly not your average nights entertainment in a Youngs Pub. It was great music that was played at just the right volume for conversation to be ripe.

For my eyes the portions when they arrived were far too small, but that's always the case for me.... With five of us eating we had a good sample of the menu. The 'Grilled Pork Sausages & Mash' with onion jus (£8.50) were perfect although possibly in need of more gravy - i love my sausages swimming in gravy, but that's a personal taste. The 'White Truffle Grain Ravioli with Shaved Parmesan', spinach salad & basil oil (£9.95) was very rich and delicious - spot on with our Brazilian companion. The 'Grilled Halibut' with fennel & leek confit, rosemary potatoes & mango tomato salsa (£14.5) was exquisite and simply melted in your mouth. The only slight grumble was the 'Whole Baked Red Mullet' with a citrus yoghurt & curried vegetable couscous (£13.95) being slightly overcooked and hence a bit dry for the Canadian with us. (Coming back to the size of the portions, I must admit that after the consumption - satisfaction complete. Anymore would have been too much.) Linen napkins would be an addition on the whole eating experience but maybe we're just being picky.

All the deserts are homemade and worth sampling. The 'Hot Chocolate Fondant Pudding' with home made vanilla ice cream - needed to take the edge off the richness of the chocolate - absolutely divine. The 'Apple & Pear Tarte Tatin' with crème fraiche, is also worth a taster.

The Waterside has an extensive wine list, beers from across the globe, Young’s Real ales and classic cocktails, although the cocktails could be improved, then again we're not talking cocktail bar here... The wine is reasonably priced at about £15 and a pint of peroni was just under £4.

For a venue only days old (opened at the end of September 2006) the staff were impeccable - fully trained up, versed and prepared for all your questions - no teething problems here. With such high standards being set we hope they'll be maintained and if they are can only see The Waterside being a success.

“They must have seen your reviewers coming. The service is always diabolical, the portion size is way too small. The food isn't that great. Go to enjoy the views and the booze and don't expect anything like value for money for the food.”

Food

The Waterside’s extensive food menu has been created by AA Rosette winner Riad Zaik formerly of Alchemy at the Academy Hotel and the Oxo Tower Restaurant. The menus are changed regularly and all dishes are freshly prepared and cooked to order using the very best quality ingredients so you can enjoy gastronomic delights such as Red Mullet or Chateaubriand.

"My Gulascheintopf war perfekt and so was the Weissbier. I was in Kingston Steins. I do have a few suggestions for decor and table. 1. you need a little jar of toothpicks on the table to get meat out from..." Which venue is this?

"I visited browns alone after work and got convinced to spend an hour in the “VIP” room with Jennifer - which is just a corner of the private dance area - no privacy at all. I essentially paid £500 for..." Which venue is this?
