The Honor Oak Review

Book a table at The Honor Oak

Top 10 things should know about The Honor Oak pub:

1) The Honor Oak would make a great boyfriend; he's what my girlfriends call a 'box ticker'.

2) After some cajoling by a mutual friend, Fluid London, it was on a Wednesday night I found myself on a blind date with the gastro pub. I'd made my way over to his SE23 stomping ground and on a dark, wet night the unfamiliar neighbourhood left me feeling slightly anxious.

3) But I needn't have worried; The Honor Oak is a true gent. From the moment I walked through its doors into its warm, comforting interior, I relaxed, allowing The Honor Oak to welcome me into its open arms and give me a 'nice to meet you' hug.

4) I'm not usually the type to kiss and tell, but as this one has me a bit excited I'll give you the gossip.

5) He'd made an effort. Having been totally refurbished this year, he looked immaculate in his outfit of Laura Asley-esque wallpaper, clean Farrow & Bull-esque paint, and low-lit, low-hanging industrial-esque lights. This dude has style.

6) He smelt good too. Intoxicating scents from the open kitchen wafted across oak tables and mismatch chairs, creeping under my nostrils. That dark, wet night was quickly forgotten and I was starting to feel a bit smitten.

7) Foreplay was a tasty red. The Honor Oak cheekily offered up a bottle of The Very Sexy Shiraz. He was obviously as interested in me as I was in him and his choice of wine suggested to me his feisty side. The gastro pubs of my past hadn't been nearly as interesting right off the bat.

8) So he had style and charm, but did he have substance? Well girls, this is where it gets really interesting because The Honor Oak is more than a one-night fling. The food was faultless, and ever since I've been lost in memories of perfectly pink duck breast and timeless pairings of scallops and pancetta.

9) Yes, The Honor Oak is dreamy and he has it all; even a Whisky Room for parties when he's feeling a bit of a lad; a toddler's play area when he's feeling paternal; and a terrace for when the sun is shining and he wants to work on his tan.

10) Honor Oak, will you marry me?

“The food here is so sub-par, over-priced, cheap, tasteless, and small portioned that it simply is not worth it. The appetizers were so small it was a pathetic insult to serve to the customers, very disappointing. The service was bad as the usual typically rude British service, the couches were dirty and unkept …how could the kitchen in the back be any better? So the calamari rings were cut way too thin, almost like strings and they gave less than only 10 rings, yes I counted! And put on top of a salad, why put calamari on top of a bunch of greens that had no salad dressing? hmm …maybe to make the dish look bigger than it was? Maybe because they were too cheap to give actual calamari in their calamari dish? Next the beef brisket tacos were the smallest 3 tacos that I have ever seen, It was like ridiculously too small, I wish that I had put a 50 pence coin next to these tacos and took a pic. Both of these appetizers were worth less than half of their menu charged price really, we were thoroughly disappointed. Still hungry ofcourse I ordered a hamburger. The bun was hard and stale, the meat was ground chuck and ground up in a course fashion so you get that non-crushed bone fragment chunk on your teeth when biting down while chewing. It was certainly not a fine ground beef like a Great American Hamburger. The cheese wasn’t even melted on top of the patty so the cook didn’t put the cheese on the beef patty while it was still on the grill. And the cheese was a very cheap cheddar Asda version slice that had zero taste to it, besides tasting like plastic. The burger was overcooked to a well-down after I had specifically asked the bartender taking my order to put down a medium-rare cook on the ticket and I even went to the cook myself which he said he would oblige no worries. It once was a good pub back in 2015, but it has changed ownership 4 times in the last 2 years and I think I know the reason(s) why. The service is terrible, the food is even more terrible, the menu changes constantly, a new “cook” NOT chef is hired every 2 months, there is zero consistencies in management, service, food quality and standards, and it is in a poor location with nothing else around, and now it’s in the toilet! This pub is absolutely terrible, and I will never recommend anyone to order anything from it’s menu besides a pint of beer which you would hope that they can’t screw that one up too. Anything more you are threading at your own peril. Bon Appétit - The Phantom Gourmet Ego ”

“On 24th January after having spent another night at the PPQ . People were commenting in conversation about the lack of atmosphere , quality of service and food . When the quiz had finished. I gave some feed back be it a bit stark about the lack of commintment by staff being unengaged with their roles in relation to customer service , and the night in general . Some comments were perhaps misplaced and I apologies for any added distress to the staff. Sadly my choice of spirit was not available or the second this night . Throughout staff looked nervous . I felt my opnion not valued. I believe its good to give feed back rather than make comments and chat among aquaintences and friends about the divide many people seem to have noted. My intention was not upset the staff but I responded to comments that had no back bone and could have been resolved in a friendlier manner. I am sure the staff have to follow the rules of the new management but this gravitates toward poor staff and customer relations . Nevertheless . I do hope the Honour Oak does well in the future and flourishes. Thank you for the work put in under the circumstances. Sincerely and with best wishes. Mary . Customer for 5 years approx. p.s. Have not seen any rewiews or comments on other sites for this year 2017. ”
