Vanilla Review

Book a table at Vanilla

After a couple of exquisitely chilled mojitos and a few glasses of Chateau St Michelle, my sister and I were sitting in the darkest room of Vanilla Restaurant on Great Titchfield Street discussing, as all ordinary siblings do, what item of clothing the restaurant was. This all arose because earlier in the day we’d had a relaxed brunch at a gastropub and had concluded that it would be a flip-flop (super-casual, youthful, a great draught, but let’s be honest, a tad smelly). The process was fun and well, the shoe fit. So, after little debate we agreed that Vanilla would most definitely be a bra. A big, pretty, padded bra.

Let me explain through mixed metaphors. Firstly the restaurant is concealed. Walking down this quiet, residential street in central London you could slip past without really noticing it. There’s a sign above the doorway but all the magic is under layers – well, underground. You stop, and enter. Lucky you. It’s beautiful! And colourful! And magical! A real double D: Designer Dungeon.

Slowly changing pink, purple, then blue lights dance across the white curtains draped throughout the venue. The tables are white, the chairs are white, the floors and ceilings are white and it’s all a little crazy. Crazy in a padded, push-up bra kind of way, but also crazy in a padded-cell kind of way. You could just about picture fellow patrons trying to sip their cocktails with their arms strapped away in straight-jackets. And then the light changes. It’s all very calming and quite hypnotic. A DJ in the corner plays mellow but funky lounge music. Crystal chandeliers droop over every table… and you wait for your medication.

And wait we did. The manager, a charming and (gratefully) involved character, informed us that they were a tad short-staffed that evening and so things were running a little behind schedule. Besides, it was a Saturday night and nearly every table was full of jovial friends and intimate lovers (make sure you book in advance on weekends!).

The dining area is a much sexier affair than the (still strangely-sexy) drinking ward. Bold design, black walls, giant mirrors. A French waiter in a suit matching the walls appeared (it seems FROM the walls) with plates of carefully presented starters. Tender and fresh tempura, spicy tiger-prawns and avocado-mousse. Thin slices of smoked duck rolled and ready to be popped in eagerly awaiting mouths with a quail egg salad. The main meals arrived shortly after. My sister had the chilli and garlic lobster with home-made tagliatelle – which was tasty but the pasta rather heavy. When it comes to siblings ordering food there is always a competition of who gets the best meal. I won (I always do). The lamb dissolved off the bone and into a sweet gravy flavoured with almonds, root vegetables and prunes.

After all that we couldn’t possibly eat anything else. It was purely my dedication to the job that saw us tucking into a sticky toffee pudding (“two spoons, please”) a mere twenty minutes later. All of the decadence was settled in the belly with a pot of steaming fresh-mint tea (me) and a Poire Williams eaudevie (firewater digestive) in a chilled bellglass (she).

It’s advised that you treat this venue as you would a bra (depending how you feel about these matters of course). It’s a great place to start your night - get your groove warmed up – but it empties out pretty quickly (the restaurant that is) and doors close at midnight. But that’s OK, it’s only once you’ve done away with this (fabulous) step that you uncover lots more fun in nearby Soho. A big thumbs up!

“Uber chic Vanilla is a hidden gem for those looking to impress. Their cocktail of the day got the dining experience off to a good start and the staff - professional, knowledgeable, friendly yet not overbearing - warm and soften the edges of the restaurant's ultra-mod feel. Food beautifully presented and impressive wine selection.”

“If you have grown tired of the loud and crowded clubs in tourist'y West End, this bar is really the new place to go. I took a big group of friends there on Thursday, and they were all really impressed by my choice. The ambience is so different from the rest of London, it's sophisticated and relaxed at the same time. The decor has a mind-blowing wow-factor when you walk in - it has white leather couches, crystal chandeliers and even a white floor - it sounds clinical, but it is only white to reflect the colour-changing LED lights. The staff was very pleasant and made us feel like really special, even though the bar was full of other people like us requesting more rounds of the well-created, potent and reasonably priced cocktails. This is definitely a place to know for that special occasion where you want to impress.”

Food

Vanilla is a mere 5 minutes from Oxford Circus yet remains an intimate oasis, where the emphasis is on ambience, with relaxed but attentive service of delicious food and drinks.

The 55 cover restaurant brings you traditional comforts in a contemporary setting.

The à la carte menu offers unpretentious modern French cuisine, expertly prepared and beautifully presented. For something lighter the bar food is equally tempting. The wine list is extensive and carefully chosen.
