Chez Gerard Review

Best for: Steaks; wine-matched meals in Fitzrovia.

Great: Price fix French menu; service.

1968: a car treasure hunt comes to an end. Filing through the sizeable gardens of the White Horse at Holtye, they're relieved to be avoiding the beginnings of a downpour. Inside this fifteenth century inn it's warm and cosy and the contents of two rival cars amalgamate, forming new friendships.

Stooping between oak beams, a fresh-faced wispy-haired hopeful approaches a young lady with Marge Simpson hair. Sitting beside an open log fire, she wears a white trouser suit and sips on a long rainbow cocktail. He bravely faces her, dazzled by her sparkling green eyes. Perhaps it's the eyes, or maybe the bottle of whisky the owner of the eyes has just won, but pursuer and oblivious target are soon walking together towards the car park.

The chivalrous gesture of lending her a raincoat to protect her from the onslaught of rain as she drives her open top Mini Moke is actually a clever ploy to see her again that unfortunately backfires several days later when said item is returned by a mutual friend. They do, however, meet again a further three days later at the Spotted Dog at Penshurst where he is again mesmerised by her emerald charms.

The pattern of these humble beginnings sets the tone for a lifetime of low-beamed buildings and open fires but in 2011 the rainbow cocktails have been replaced by a far more sensible and less visually pleasing glass of Appletizer. As he's prodded and pumped full of drugs, their now-aged first born chaperones the girl with the green eyes, treating her to a French-themed anniversary at the original branch of Chez Gerard.

Here a simple but effective granite, white and wood theme replaces the favoured old-world-inn look with intimate glass booths, wood and mirror paneled walls, black and white framed prints, and a large ceiling skylight. Being a Wednesday, and one of the restaurant's most popular nights, it's busy with a 30+ crowd who all animatedly chatter over almost inaudible background music.

The Sancerre La Fuzelle arrives and it's time to toast humble beginnings before devouring a beautifully cooked Coquilles Saint Jacques with a delicious sauce and an exceedingly generous helping of Steak Tartare, unusually spicy and accompanied by toasted sourdough.

There's little time to wait before staff, providing a fast and unobtrusive service, arrive to replace empty starter dishes with Tornedos De Boeuf Rossini and Carre D'agneau. At £28, the girl with the green eyes has chosen one of the most expensive dishes, but it's well worth the money: West Country beef fillet, seared foie gras, truffles and perigardine sauce with a little copper saucepan of creamy mashed potato on the side.

Tonight has certainly challenged expectations as each course arrives attractively presented but contrary to pre-conceived notions. While the dessert menu is perused and attempts are made to guess what clever twists dear old Gerard will have up his sleeve, a phone rings and is located.

Anniversary wishes are electronically shared and the absentee recalls “meeting the parents”: “The whole family sat around a long kitchen table staring at me and her mother's first words were 'Come and have a swim.' Georgie looked like a challenge the first time I met her and always has been.”

Out of eight equally mouth-watering desserts, “the challenge” has selected Nougatine Glacee, while the mini-her goes for Il Flouttante; once again both surprised by the form each sweet takes. Facing someone who poses a “challenge”, Chez Gerard manages admirably, possibly even tempting a return visit to utilise the intimate upstairs 16-seater private dining area in celebration of an imminent hospital release.

“My husbnd and I went there to celebrate my birthday. Atmosphere was very nice. Waiters were French and treating us with great respect. Food was very tasty and done the way we requested. Wine and deserts were the best quality. I fully enjoyed my birthday dinner and I am going to visit the restaurant one more time. Watch out for tips as service charge is included in a bill, and we ended up paying twice! I think the price for this kind of food and service was good-£63 for two (including wine and desert, without extra tip of course).”
