The Noble Review

Out with the old sofa and in with the new! The Noble has recently taken over from the 'Big Fat Sofa' on Crouch Hill and is already causing quite a stir. Having only been open for since early November (2006) this quirky bar-restaurant is certainly on its way to becoming a hotspot for both food and drink.

The bar, which has undergone a subtle makeover, now offers retro interiors with chucky wooden tables and comfortable couch and booth seating. Surroundings are cosy with candles on every table and a good mix of chill out music adds to the relaxed atmosphere.

The food, free range and organic, is freshly prepared and absolutely delicious. There are no menus just a blackboard which hangs above the fireplace. Around 6 starters and 6 mains are offered with a pleasant mix of vegetarian, meat and fish options. To begin I sampled the beer battered Cajun prawns served with a hollandaise sauce. This was a truly complimentary combination. The prawns, juicy and not shy in size, were cooked to perfection and certainly had spice. I felt that my main course took a little longer to appear however on arrival it was clear that the meal had been freshly prepared and cooked to perfection making it definitely worth waiting for. This dish consisted of courgette, pepper and aubergine layered together with feta cheese and wrapped in a crispy filo pastry. This was accompanied by a delightful warm tomato coulis. Starters were priced at around £5 and mains from £9.50.

The bar provided a well-rounded drinks selection with a few interesting non-alcoholic options including a range of organic drinks from Luscombe. The wine list offered a fine selection of palatable wines available by the bottle and the glass.

This unpretentious and laid back bar is a definite must try' and I’m sure it will leave a lasting impression. more

“Just moved to the area and after walking past the pub numerous times the welcoming glow of the interior proved just too much to resist. My friend had been banging on about his local for some time and i thought there was no chance of this small pub being as good as he made out. I was wrong. There is a nice range of beers and spirits here, a few i had never encountered before, and the food is fantastic. The staff i found to be very pleasent and easy on the eye, which is never a bad thing, and the owner a thoroughly charming chap. Not a hint of the rudeness the previous reviewer commeted on although i have been told of the previous co-owner who apparently left some months ago and fancied himself as a bit of a gorden ramsey with an attitude to match but thankfully he is long gone.”

“How a pub (which fancies itself as a gastro joint obviously) can continue operating and apparently being popular to some of the more mindless young and cash ready beats me! I witnessed someone high up 'tearing a strip' off a quiet and friendly barmaid in front of us when she did not get the music right (she looked like she was too used to it and needed to keep her job). This pub has been in its current manifestation for some years - it is tucked away at the top of Stroud Green opposite Crouch Hill station. I wish it was staffed as it was two years plus back. It was quieter and more friendly too. It is clear that the head barman makes a thing out of being rude to customers he doesn't like. I think he expects to get his own TV show maybe on the back of it. I work in television and I can safely say you would only surface on an obscure cable channel dedicated to the Terminally Stupid. Not smart and funny enough. Maybe his acolytes at the bar get free drinks to keep them sweet. The food quality (I had the ribeye steak) was actually good - so the chef is a real asset. The small square plates were not cleverly retro though - 4 chips and 2 pieces of veg was all there was room for. If people want a cider pub go to the Harp in Chandos Place, The Bree Louise by Euston, or The Green Man in Riding House Street. The latter is the same groovy sort of place but with good staff and management. And do not query the automatic inclusion of the service on the PDQ machine which is awesomely difficult to reverse off - you might just get barred. I bet the staff don't get this percentage and would prefer to be somewhere else. I am local but never again (until the management changes). One star for the food. 'Nulle poin' for the customer care.”

“the theory is great, the reality disappoints. no tv screens, no gaming machines, good music but not too loud, nice mixed clientele, good food, range of beers etc... but we have had a different experience from previous reviewers. We have found the staff surly and humourless to the point of being rude. Penultimate time we were there we were told there would be a half hour wait for the sunday roast, but after an hour and a half we were told it wasn't happening and left with the resounding feeling that it was somehow our fault for being so stupid as to believe them and wait that long. Other stuff friendly and okay to be fair but have had one too many surly and unwelcoming responses from the main man... I've seen in previous reviews on other sites people complain about being charge service for a pub lunch. I don't mind having served my time working in pubs, but service charge for rudeness is not on. That said, give it a go, you may have a different experience. But for us, we can always find somewhere else to go in this area”

“This place has advertising saying the best Sunday roast in north london... Always a bold statement... but this time it proves to be right on the money. My main suggestion would be to come early, as getting into the pub when it is busy can be difficult. We have been here a few times over the last year and it is great, the staff are laid back and friendly, the food is simply amazing and the choice of drinks is really good. In my opinion the best pub in London! There I said it.... Make up your own mind.”

“Oh my god, thank goodness there is a decent place to hang out in the area. I've never seen this pub so busy! The staff are cool and friendly without being too OTT. We used to go to Highbury for Sunday roast, but now we come here. Everything that is served is made to order. The homemade olive bread was devine, though I'm not sure that the balsamic and olive oil gave it the justice it deserved. I love this pub so much that I persuaded my company to have the Christmas dinner here as the food is that good! Really looking forward to what these guys do in the new year. So far so good..... ”

“Well it is about time there is somewhere decent to eat in the area. It is now called the Noble. Yet another business has come and gone from this building. Me and my girl friend went in for a drink on a friday night and could not resist to order some of the food. I had a dumpling of prawn that was wrapped in sweet potato and served on a seaweed salt and my girl friend the quail on a wild mushroom risotto which were both fantastic. To follow we both had the duck with tomato and chilli jam and again nothing bad to say at all but the highlight has got to be tha fantastic chocolate souffle with home made ice cream probably the best dessert i have ever had. It was a little quiet but it is early days, i think this will turn into a very busy pub.”

“Not sure what the reviewer's complaint is - this is a great bar and a really welcome addition to Finsbury Park / Stroud Green. Really good music, reasonable food, great atmosphere. The kind of pub you could spend all day in.”

“Firstly Big Fat Sofa does not and never has served Jack Daniels, secondly we would not ask which bourbon as we only have one and that is Makers Mark. I don't know who this guy is and hope he never returns... The feedback we do get is great from all our customers in respect of the atmosphere, the friendly staff, the good food and the fantastic music. I personally think this dude needs to stick to Wetherspoons.”

“if you enjoy being gawked at by the locals and having bar staff ask you what sort of bourbon you would like (they only carry jack daniels, technically a sour mash and not a bourbon at all), this is the place for you. ”
