The Czech and Slovak Club Description
Located in West Hampstead, London NW6, the Czech and Slovak Club (officially called the Czechoslovak National House), a meeting place of Czech and Slovak nationals living in or visiting London, extends a warm welcome to all who want to experience the atmosphere of a Czech bar and restaurant and sample Czech and Slovak cuisine and beverages without having to cross the English Channel.
Called in one newspaper "London's premier dumpling establishment", it is usually full of Czechs and Slovaks made happy by a combination of good beer and Europe's finest dumplings. However, do not let the word "dumpling"
The Club has a bar area where visitors can sit and chat over a drink of their choice, including Czech beer and a selection of wines and spirits, before dining, if they wish to do so, in the Club's restaurant. Decorated in flock wallpaper, the restaurant's atmosphere is informal.
The restaurant's menu includes a selection of Czech and Slovak dishes such as pork with sauerkraut and dumplings, meatloaf - yes, you have guessed it - with sauerkraut and dumplings, svickova, roast duck, goulash and Wiener schnitzel. However, the best treat is, probably, the sweets. The choice includes pancakes, apple strudel or apricot dumplings, the restaurant's speciality: when they arrive the apricot dumplings sit lordly on the plate, lapping at their edges a small amount of melted butter while on their top lies an enticing crust of sugar.
The Czech and Slovak Club is a uniquely delightful place, the perfect antidote to the modern West End eateries and the prices are implausibly low. It is usually necessary to book a table, especially if you wish to visit at the weekend.

“My Polish friend introduced me to this place a few years ago and I've been going nearly every week ever since. It's an Oasis with lots of space where you can eat a nice traditional meal. My fav is the Beef Gulash or Chicken schniztel.”

“I've been to czecho-slovakian restaurant a few times but only with my mates from Slovakia. Although the food was always excellent every time I came I felt like i was going back to the past. The entire restaurant is very dated and it looks like the time has stopped just before 1989! To add to my genuine disappointment I took my lovely english boyfriend there a few days ago and I'm telling you now - I will not be returning again. After we found out the eating part - the one which is a bit "nicer" then the rest of the place, is totally full we have been told "to find ourselves seats, then come and order the food from a waiter and drinks at the bar"!!! What a wonderful service, isn't it? They not only expect you to order everything at the same time, but chase the waiter round, pay for the meal straightaway and then run to the bar and order drinks, sit down next to the loud bunch of drunken czeks in the not at all pleasantly looking drinking part of the restaurant. So we finished our pints as quickly as we could and left even quicker. To be honest with you, I nearly felt a bit ashamed of being a slovakian. It just reminded me of the BBC programme Michael Pallin's New Europe. It's just not a representative establishment at all, and I think we can do much better then that, don't you?”

“Well, the pub is not very nice, really. But czech girls are worth it :-) Specially one gorgeous blonde pussy cat. She's got long blonde hair (everyones dream!) and she is soooooooo sexy and beautiful that you have to visit this pub.
I saw her there twice and always on Fridays.
And if she is not there, never mind! Because the czech beer is great!”

“I live near by so I decide to try Cz food. It was excellent! Huge portions, very tasty. Not very nice surroudings and the pub was busy from locals supporting ice hockey. But it was great choice on menu and drinks and very reasonable.”

“Upon arriving we found that no seats were available due to various young people hording seats for friends who had not yet arrived (amazingly one chap with 8 to himself!). We asked the staff politely if they could assist given that we were intended to have a meal and there were free tables, just lacking the chairs. We were rather taken aback to be informed that we could either wait until someone left or leave now as to quote “our custom was not really required”.
I do appreciate that this is one of only a few Czech / Slovak venues in London, but given their web-site offers the promise of a ‘a warm welcome to all who want to experience the atmosphere of a Czech bar and restaurant’ I found this attitude totally unacceptable.
Having visited the Czech Republic several times I can truly say that Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and the people most hospitable. Unfortunately this venue is obviously lacking in any form of customer care and I have nothing positive to pass comment on. Given our experience I would strongly recommend avoiding this establishment at all costs.
