The Alice House Review

Book a table at The Alice House

Much like Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland, The Alice House in West Hampstead is full of fun, quirky details; a perfect place to escape for some mouth-watering tapas, original cocktail mixes and candlelit comfort. Vintage touches add glamour against a blank canvas of stripped brickwork and steel beams, while candles and little pots of herbs and flowers dotted along the window ledges add a homely feel to this very chilled out bar.

The Alice House is the newest addition to the Urban Leisure Group’s chain of trendy London venues; a re-launch in April 2009 has transformed it from its predecessor Eclipse. The large, tree-lined decked area at the front is perfect for watching the world of West End Lane go by. Inside, a mix of tables, chairs and cosier step down area with generous leather sofas that invite you to curl up in provide plenty of seating options.

The promise of fresh juices and pastries, great Monmouth coffee and infamous Lola cupcakes make it a great place to come for breakfast, a respite during the day or a lazy Sunday with newspapers. Or if you can’t bear to be separated from your laptop, there’s free Wi-Fi available. There’s also the promise of a soon-to-launch Secret Den, hidden down a candlelit stone spiral staircase, which will make a great hireable space for karaoke, film nights and special occasions.

In the evenings, the lights are dimmed and candles are dotted around, blanketing the venue with a romantic hue. A DJ plays a mix of beats at a volume that keeps you stimulated but allows you to talk. An abundance of smiling waitresses ensures your empty glasses are whipped away and new orders are taken without you having to head to the bar if you don’t want to. And if you do decide to get in a round, the well staffed, 360 degree accessible bar, with an impressive web of lights stemming from it, keeps the queues to a minimum. Staff expertly whip-up shooters, martinis and unique Alice House cocktails such as the signature coconut, lemongrass and basil mojito I ordered when we arrived – an absolute winner; followed closely by their three berry mix. My friend was immediately won over when he discovered they serve Red Stripe on tap – a rarity. House wines are well-priced and pleasingly Organic – the Rioja is particularly good.

The relaxed elements are carried through to the evening menu – a mix of tapas and larger dishes – priced from £4; weekday and weekend breakfast, lunch and brunch menus offer a more extensive list of starters and mains. After a tough selection process – all the options sounded fantastic – we were presented with posh restaurant-worthy dishes of giant marinated olives; chorizo cooked in Rioja; courgette wrapped feta with sunblushed tomatoes and rosemary; lamb kofte with a cucumber and yoghurt dip; and cured salmon on toasted rye bread. Each one was as pleasing as the next, and the use of fresh ingredients was evident – the good quality salmon should get a special mention as it won over my friend who really is not usually a fan.

Tapas enthusiastically devoured and a few more great tracks from the DJ and we were ready for our ‘one for the road’: an espresso this time, accompanied by a Lola cupcake chosen from a selection of dainty handcrafted, decorative and delicious delights that wouldn’t go amiss at a certain Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Overall, a cosy, quirky, glamorous evening.

“I really enjoyed myself at this place. the cocktails were divine and although pretty cosy, it was buzzing. as a single girl, you'll really enjoy the feel with lots of young professionals around. the decor is nothing exceptional, even though they were obviously trying to be creative. the service was good too. and id go back.”

“Love, Love, Love! I stumbled on this place on a venture round West Hampstead one eve. It's a couple of tube stops away from my house, but I'll definitely be adding this to my list of 'regulars'. Really laid back, pretty busy, but in a good way, and the best mojito choices I've seen.”

“A fantastic addition to my local West Hampstead! (not that we have that many bars to choose from!) Alice House hasn't been open that long and I was put off going in italy as the place always seemed packed, however the trip is well worth it; the interior is stunning and a lot of effort has gone into their brilliant cocktail menu and food generally. I would recommend going for lunch/coffee etc when its slightly more chilled out - always good service and atmosphere. Amy C”
