Catcher in The Rye Review
A novel approach.
The Catcher in the Rye is a welcome addition to the Finchley eating and drinking scene. Having recently been refurbished from being a grubby pub to a pub to go to for grub (by the Faucet Inns Group) there’s little in the immediate area that competes with it.
This large pub set on one floor has been split into different sections using clever seating and dais, providing little nooks and crannies for a bit of privacy.
Clean, modern styling with simple features (one large poppy mural, a real fireplace, pages from J D Salinger’s book) work well but it’s the food that really makes this place stand out.
A delicious main of salmon with lemon and thyme mash and lime beurre blanc (£8.95) was perfectly cooked, generous in portion and came with a really moreish fragrant cream sauce. Great potato wedges (£3) came served with creme fraiche and sweet chilli.
My mate, who kept craning his neck to check the football they were screening in one of the sections of the pub, chose the Thai spiced swordfish (£8.95) which was superb (am basing this on the fact that he said so and also cos he forgot about the footie until the millisecond he’d finished eating).
The wine list comes with very reasonable prices. An elegant Vega del
Raya Rioja is one of their mid-priced bottles at £14.50. Definitely worth a mention is the Kronenberg Blanc they have on tap (£3.80), a refreshing brew with a lingering peach perfume and coriander notes. Also on tap are San Miguel, Fosters, Stella and three ales.
Also watch out for a seasonally changing menu, their specials, a possible late license, the massive queen olives they’ve got at the bar (they’re like plums) and last but not least the staff run this operation with care and professionalism.
This pub is smart, slick and scrummy. There was only one thing that tried to ruin the evening for me, a tiny persistent bug that kept trying to get in on my pan-fried salmon. But that’s insects for you, when it comes to the Catcher in the Rye there are no flies on them....read more

“There is definitely a management presence there now and it seems like they have done the most wonderful job. The staff seem a lot
Happier and all the old customers are coming back. The quality of food has grown significantly in the past 3 months as previously I’d dread to eat from there. 10:10 for the manager who is now running what is a wonderful business. ”

“They literally clicked us out! We called in advance, if we can bring our dogs in. We described their size and all... Made a lame excuse about food hygiene even though it was a complete bullsh*t.
The manager was so rude he didn't even come to apologise...
You ether aloud dogs or your not! Discrimination against a dog size is not different that any other kind of discrimination... Shameful.”

“An Oasis in a sea of mediocrity. All parts of London should have a local like this. Great food, beer (especially the Kronenbourg Blanc) and welcoming, helpful, professional staff.
