The Bishop Review

Chess is a game of war. Two opposing armies face each other and one by one viciously attack.

Everything is reduced to black and white.

There are only two possible results: total victory or total surrender.

The Bishop pub in Dulwich really has nothing to do with chess, apart from the name and some trendy big chess pieces behind the bar for thematic styling, but I just can’t resist a dramatic intro. This can lead to trouble in life, and writing.

The Bishop, unlike me, does not overdo it. It’s a nice, casual gastropub. It is, in fact, like many of the trendy, easy going pubs that have sprung up across London in the last decade. This is not a criticism; there are a lot of them, but this is because they are so easy to enjoy. Nice décor and good food are hard to fault.

The Bishop has comfy leather booths to slide into with friends (or lovers), interesting light fixtures and old fashioned mirrors. It’s a pleasant pub for a drink inside or out - there are benches by the side of the road. The crowd are aged somewhere between 19 and 39 and some were a little bit trendy, but not in an intimidating way.

The food was great. Pub food is not what it once was. To the dismay of some it has moved away from unidentifiable meat in gallons of gravy; however, I, for one, am very happy about the shift into more adventurous cuisine.

I had absolutely wonderful mussels which I bought on a whim. I have never really liked mussels but appreciate the concept of a huge bowl of molluscs and hoped my palate had matured. Possibly it has, but I suspect that my liking for the dish was due to the deliciousness of The Bishop’s mussels more then anything else. I had to push the bowl away from me so that I wouldn’t just pick it up and drink the tasty sauce. For a starter, my friend and I shared a creamy haddock and parmesan dish with toast. It was perfect comfort food; exactly the sort of thing needed when starving and feeling a little cold (as well as when perfectly warm and happy).

The Bishop actually sells wine from the tap in litres or half litres. I thought this was a very interesting touch because there’s no need to buy a whole bottle (to share!) if you don’t want to drink much. Also, as a lover of everything relating to France, I always enjoy drinking my wine from a carafe.

The atmosphere was perky enough, a low hum of voices and music quiet enough to allow nattering; perfect. It’s not the done thing to natter during a game of chess though, especially when nearing the end of the contest. The finale of chess is bloodthirsty. Someone starts to lose. The pieces begin to turn towards the King. Like vultures, they pick off the weak, which lay down their lives to protect the crown. Until, a mistake is made; check, a final skirmish and suddenly, checkmate, the game is over. Again, that had nothing to do with The Bishop but I needed a good ending, didn’t I?

“Well I used to enjoy coming to this pub but a rather nasty incidence yesteday has soured my experience of this place. I've always found this pub a nice place to come and sit outside when the weather is good. Of late however I've been finding that within the crowd gathering outside there are now some unsavoury characters turning up. It seems as if the Bishop are not doing enough to detour such nasty individuals. The bishop need to stop serviing such idiots and ban them at the first sign of trouble.”

“Not enough good beers. I suppose they want to get rid of the old school dulwich drinker, food o.k Too many prams in the day. The mums look at you as if you are a leper in a pub! Get out and get a job! I only go there to see snow white.”

“People need to get a grip, wanting quiet atmosphere, speedy service great food, anyone ever stop and think that a saturday night isn't a tuesday lunch time? The Bishop is far and away the nicest, best run pub on lordship lane. Having managed my own place it is clear this independant pub has a strong clientele and a good balance of vibe and quietude. Go back to your Mitchells and Butler pubs if you want Brakes frozen slop and a good beer served badly.”

“Get a life Ken, you raging alcoholic. Leffe is served in half pints universally because it's even stronger than your average wife-beater. And you're complaining 'cos they wouldn't do you a pint? You must be from Mars, or something. Pub's fine by the way... food's not bad either...”

“We went to The Bishop on the saturday night, not a good idea if you're eating, the service is very slow and no coordination...... very loud place to be when the drinkers are mixed with the ones who are eating.....”

“Visiting friends in the area we were looking for a bite to eat and decided to pop into the newly opened Bishop. Most impressed! We were greeted by the Manager, a charming young man, who showed us to a table and took our order. How nice to have table service! (The service was excellent throughout our visit). The menu was interesting and varied. We had a few of the starters, all of which were extremely good and the tuna steak for my main course was superb. Also, I had a bottle (or two!) of probably the nicest white wine I can remember having tasted. All in all well worth a visit.”

“Pretentious Moi? My partner Eva and I popped into The Bishop last night for a quick drink before going on for dinner. The bar is trendy and newly opened, it serves a selection of beers Leffe, Budvar, Scrumpy, Abbotts, Ale Fresco; it also has a reasonable looking food menu. However, there is one issue that I would like to draw attention to. They do not serve pints of Leffe. I ordered a pint and a half of Leffe last night, and was told that they only serve it in half pints. When I pointed out that the other beers were served in pints, I was told that it was not the case for Leffe. When I asked why, I was initially told "I don't know" by the barman. Never daunted by being fobbed off, I made further enquiries; it turns out that they believe that it is only served on the Continent in half pints. Nonsense! Sorry guys, pretentious nonsense in my view. If the customer wants a pint, then serve him a pint.”
