Le Chardon Description

leased to keep the history of the former David Greig site alive, with many of its original authentic features.

Robert Benyayer, owner of Le Chardon, first came to London in 1984 from Cannes in the South of France. Shops and restaurants have always run in his family and with years of chef experience in Cannes and catering experience in the French army, Robert came to London to work at the Claridges Hotel.

After travelling the world and spending over 10 years working in many other establishments including the renowned London Champagne Exchange and La Bouche, Robert opened his own place. Le Chardon opened in 1997 and has since enjoyed its reputation for authentic French food, style and taste.

“After some deliberation we decided to order a large platter of seafood and kindly asked for the oysters to be replaced with other seafood, as neither of us eats oysters. This was granted. The white house wine was particularly pleasant and sweet for the price, so well done. So far so good but here is were the pleasure ends. The seafood platter was sufficiently impressive, and the big crab that came with it was adequately pre-cut to make the eating experience easier. Unfortunately both the crab and the seafood seemed utterly tasteless, with no aroma, it let me to believe they came straight from frozen, or where overcooked in-house and then frozen. But even then, I had better tasting gambas and langoustines from supermarkets in my life so I must say this is the worst seafood I have ever tasted. Having lived in Antibes for a number of years, and having eaten seafood in many countries I have had the opportunity to experience what seafood tastes like. Now I appreciate that London is not Mediterranean and we are not on the coast, so freezing fish and seafood is expected, this however, was certainly not fresh and gave the impression that the cook lives on a low salt diet. The main courses we ordered consisted of lemon sole for my wife and loup de mer for myself. The first thing I noticed is that my loup de mer seemed visibly overcooked, and this was confirmed from the first bite that I took, it was 95% dry. The sauce that came with it did little to enhance it, as all the juice was lost already. I also had the chance to taste my wife?s fish, which unfortunately was also completely flat in taste, no flavour what so ever and no salt. Although the sauce was there, it was like if the sauce and the fish were two separate things, they did not enhance each other and we were left with the impression that the products used were not of good quality. The sauce felt like it was put together at the last minute. The gratin I ordered was uninspiring, lacking in garlic and devoid of pepper or salt. What makes me sad is not the fact that we chose Le Chardon for our wedding anniversary, but the fact that people coming to this restaurant will think ?this is French cuisine?. I was embarrassed for one, that is sure. As my father would say ?the secret to making good food is love?. Unfortunately, there is no love to be found at Le Chardon.”

Hated

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
