Crown & Greyhound Review

The 'Dog' as this huge Pub has been affectionately known by the locals is located right in the heart of Dulwich village. It looks great from the outside and given that there are very few other pubs in the immediate vicinity, the Crown & Greyhound is something of an oasis in a parched land.

As you enter, the front of the bar has huge windows that allow the light to stream in. This makes it the perfect place to while away a couple of hours in the afternoon. They have a good range of cask and draft lagers and beers all of which are reasonably priced. Wine lovers are fairly well catered for with a mix of over 40 old and new world wines most of which are available by the glass as well as by the bottle. Excluding the champagnes, prices vary from £10.00 to £18.00 so in some peoples eyes the Crown could be the ideal spot for a summer date.

Passing through the bar there are lots of areas to sit down in, with both smoking and non smoking sections. Moving out the back you hit another excellent reason to come here while we still have anything of our summer left. The pub has a huge beer garden with plenty of seating and a vast grass and tree covered area behind the main building and court yard garden. Food and drink can be taken out here and children can play about in the back bit whilst the parents can have a quiet drink. On the day that I went (Sunday afternoon) the garden was very busy but you could still grab a table.

Customers varied from families out for a roast to twentysomethings nursing the traditional British Sunday hangover. The fact that the pub is so big means that it can accommodate a lot of different groupings without them being in your face. This makes the pub a really enticing prospect on a busy Sunday afternoon.

Food is available throughout the week from noon right up until 10pm. (9pm on a Sunday). The options are fairly normal for a popular London Pub. Rib eye steak with Mushrooms and vine tomatoes and wedges or Suffolk sausages with chive mash and red onion gravy both sounded tempting.

However given that it was a Sunday and they have a special carvery going on, I opted for the roast beef, my other half going for the roast pork. I have eaten at the Crowns carvery a long time ago (and under different management) and was not impressed. Things however have thankfully changed for the better. Huge joints of meat are sliced up in front of you with good vegetables and really meaty flavoursome gravy. Portions are substantial. At £8.50 it is quite a bargain. Service both behind the bar and in the carvery was friendly and efficient. The beef was tender and well cooked, the pork crackling - very tasty indeed.

After eating I was so full that I felt the need for a contented sleep. However the location of the pub next to Dulwich park and the picture gallery gives you plenty of opportunity to walk off the excesses of Lunch afterwards. Given the size of your meal I think that the walk will probably be quite long. I'll be back.

“As a regular in the pub, I must say that things are improving. After a slow death of the pub last year, by the brewery changing the pub around. Tom the Assistant Manager, has really turned the pub around in the last few weeks. Lets hope he stays. The next thing the brewery can do, is spend money on the toilets.”

“what a shame it was the day this pub was taken over by a franchise. The venue is fantastic. Huge spacious garden terrace, great for summer afternoons. cosy wooden interior with comfy sofas as well as traditional pub wooden arm chairs. Terribly over priced, overrated food and expensive drinks. Recommend befriending staff for excellent service and generous attitudes. Good company. Child and pet friendly.”

Loved

"Very rude management. Asked to leave the table when there were no queues. Then the manager was very arrogant and told us that if we wanted to leave a negative review we could do so. Poor customer service..." Which venue is this?
