A real gem of a speakeasy. Once the preserve of those in the know, Ruby’s Basement Bar is emerging into the spotlight. Psst, over here… Come closer and I’ll tell you a secret. Head along out of Dalston along Kingsland High Street, just over the border into what locals call Stokey, and look out for a bouncer guarding an inconspicuous door. If he gives you the nod, you’ll be admitted down the steep staircase into the chic sanctum of Ruby’s speakeasy. Slip into your seat and wait for the waitress to come over: the cocktails are so painstakingly created that service can be a little slow, so I’d advise

ordering two at a time. The menu changes regularly but the Blackberry Mojito is so good that it remains a regular fixture – all juices and syrups are freshly made on site so whatever you choose, it’s going to be delicious. So delicious, in fact, that this celebrity haunt is fast-becoming London’s worst-kept secret. And as it’s seating-room only, make sure you get in quick. (Abigail Smith)
