The Rose & Crown Description
The Rose & Crown on Highgate High Street, a place frequented so often by royalty in the 17th and 18th Centuries that the back bar was famously dubbed the ‘Royal Box’, has been resurrected under new management as an intimate and refined destination restaurant.
New proprietor and head chef Gareth Thomas has breathed life in to this former public house situated in the popular village of Highgate. Originally from Wales, Thomas was a professional rugby player earning six caps for his country at student level before injury led him to pursue an entirely different path.
Within a few years, Thomas
On returning to the UK, Thomas secured the enviable role of working with and training under Gary Rhodes at Rhodes 24 in the heart of the city.
The Rose & Crown is Thomas’ first gastronomic venture and with such training and experience, it is perhaps not surprising that Thomas’ menu combines modern British cooking with a classic French influence.
Mains include guinea fowl with brussel sprouts, white truffle puree, fondant potato with caramelised chestnuts and jus gras; pan fried stonebass with scallops, spinach and a champagne veloute; and confit of Welsh shoulder of lamb with a pea and mint risotto. Desserts comprise a chocolate fondant with griottines cherries and pistachio ice cream; custard tart with rhubarb compote; and a cognac parfait with chocolate ravioli and poached apricots.
Lunchtime brings with it daily specials from heart-warming, succulent fish pies to an innovative mutton and sage pudding with caper sauce. Another to look out for is Thomas’ and O’Connor’ award winning* beef shin burger with triple cooked handcut chips which is simply a culinary delight.
Open for Sunday lunch, Thomas and his team’s soon to be famous roasts are ideal for enjoying with family and friends and the perfect way to end the weekend. Recommended this spring is the arrival of Gower Salt Marsh lamb.
All menus are complemented by a strong, international wine list. Choose from the multi-award winning Sicilian Fiano 2007 MandraRossa; Australian Pinot Noir 2004 from Victoria’s Yering Station vineyard; and for those wanting a touch of sparkle or to celebrate a special occasion, a range of fine champagnes and Prosecco are available. Peroni is just one of the lagers available on draft as well as Guinness and selection of premium spirits.
Previously a run of the mill gastropub, Thomas has overseen a sophisticated and contemporary refurbishment of the Rose & Crown creating a beautiful restaurant complete with a separate bar area for those that just fancy a drink. Stylish yet subtle in design, bold wallpapers combined with simple leather seating and ambient lighting all go towards creating a special yet relaxed atmosphere which make the dining experience even more enjoyable.
The on-set of sunnier weather will see the official opening of the Rose & Crown’s garden which can accommodate upwards of fifty people and is set to be a popular destination when Thomas will introduce cooking al fresco.
Both the restaurant and garden can be hired for private events from a sit down meal for an anniversary to a fully catered wedding reception.
Thomas has bolstered his team with the skills of Joanne Parker, previously manager of The Gun restaurant in London’s Docklands where. Together with a team of experienced chefs and waiting staff, the Rose & Crown promises both a professional and truly welcoming service.
This striking new restaurant complete with skilful cooking, elegant design, charming service and competitive pricing dictates that the Rose & Crown in Highgate is destined to attract more than just locals.

“I moved into the area in Summer 2009 and have now eaten several times at the Rose and Crown. Each time I have found it welcoming, with pleasant, but-non-intrusive service, excellent food and wine and charming surroundings. I cannot fathom a previous comment made by a vegetarian, but then again, I cannot fathom vegetarians (a rich person's political affectation as humans have evolved to be successful omnivores). I feel fortunate to have such a good value, top-notch restaurant and bar practically on my doorstep and would eat there more often, if I didn't work abroad so much. I remember it in a previous incarnation as a pub that was going slightly to seed and I commend the current proprietor's efforts.”

“Three of us popped to the Rose & Crown for Sunday lunch and only one of us left satisfied. The choice for non-meat eaters was awful, the only vegetarian main resembled a starter (literally six bits of pasta with 3 cherry tomatoes cut in half), the service was poor and the manner in which the venue has been refurbished isn't particularly appealing. All in all, no great value for money as we ended up paying £70 for a rather forgettable meal with no wine or starters.”

“Lovely, fresh place but definitely more a restaurant than a bar or pub. "Drinking area" very small in the front, but perhaps more bar area hidden away somewhere as we didn't explore the whole venue. Food is beautifully presented, and delicious, with a very good menu choice and variety. Staff very congenial and welcoming.”
