The Crown Tavern Review
Book a table at The Crown Tavern
The Crown Tavern of Clerkenwell with its incredible history has reopened with a brand new look and upstairs bar. Head to this much-loved local and tuck into the new British menu and discover the pub’s secrets for yourself. The beautifully dark and decadent pub is filled with trinkets from forgotten times and hideaway snugs including The Clock room where in 1905 Stalin and Lenin held secret meetings under the Conspirator Clock. Black and white photographs of ballet performers line the walls, reminiscent of the previous concert hall once housed in the upstairs Apollo Lounge – a newly bright and spacious area now boasting a brand new bar.

“Meeting friends at The Crown is always a delight on a rainy Saturday afternoon, even more so than on hot summer days. The range of Belgian and fruit beers delight the palate, and should you find their alcohol content leaves you lightheaded, the range of bar snack and meals are toothsome and satisfying. The staff are extremely friendly and the place has the atmosphere of a country village pub - albeit with and urban upmarket bohemianism that reminds you you are just around the corner from Fabric and Turnmills superclubs, seated right in the heart of the media/design/IP/advertising hub that is Farringdon. Highly recommended for its unique blend of old world charm, public house relaxed ethos, absence of pretentious fittings and creative crowd. ”

“I have only been in this pub for lunch a few times. The first two occassions were fine, the guy serving the food was slightly in your face & verging on irritating, but did mean well i guess.
As described, the pub is a nice comprimise between trendy & fusty so we decided to go again for a celebration lunch. BIG mistake.
When ordering our food we weren't warned they had a meeting in the fuction room upstairs, this was apparently a big problem for the 3 bar snacks we ordered.
20 minutes after ordering our food we were told we would probably have a further 20 minute wait as the kitchen couldn't cope with the function and standard orders for food (it wasn't busy).
About 25 minutes later, as we were getting our money back for our non-existent food, our order arrived. This was, obviously really annoying not to mention a waste of a precious lunch-hour. However, the worst part of this was the total lack of apology and willingness to try and smooth ruffled feathers.
The aforementioned over-eager member of staff soon vanished when more than inane chat was required and the guy who seemed to be in charge had no sympathy for our complaint and actually turned hostile!
We won't be going back.”

Food
At lunch enjoy sarnies including Scottish smoked salmon open sandwich, with cream cheese and avocado; & salt beef Reuben with sauerkraut & hot cheddar. For the evening menu, start with pan-fried king prawns & chorizo on toasted sourdough; or handmade scotch eggs. Mains include a trio of British Isles beef pie, slowly cooked in red wine, shallots & bacon then served with roasted veggies; or seafood linguine with king prawns, squid, n’duja & olives. On Sundays, enviable roasts are on offer.
