The Bowler Review

And news just in…..spanking-new Bowler puts Freddie Flintoff’s position as England’s best all-rounder in jeopardy!

With the ability to hit anyone for six, this fresh youngster has some quality length on it’s full toss and can easily bowl a maiden over. In other words, this fledgling two-in-one bar/restaurant can, and will, deliver warmth to the chilliest of cockles. The crimson walls and lively music ensure this, whilst a scaled-down, pepped-up bar version of the restaurant menu can, and will, deliver warmth to….(*insert preference here)

These winning ways follow through on the attractive New World/Old World/Out of this World wine list which would assist any budding suitor trying to woo a gullible Valentine’s catch. The bar and restaurant even have their own in-swinging entrances - one door for boozing, one door for schmoozing.

So, what of the participating public who come to play at The Bowler? During the week there’s room enough to share a steady stream of Irish, West Country, French and Belgian ales with the publishing big boys from the near-by houses of EMAP and The Guardian (save the fun of ‘elbows to the ribs’ for weekday mornings on the Northern line). Considering the area, the weekends are oddly overrun with locals, roasts and the very same magazines and broadsheets written by the midweek crowd.

If you live in Farringdon, square-leg it down there and claim that wicket. If you don’t, move to Farringdon! Owzaaaattt!…..now over to me for the The Bowler Surf ‘n Turf forecast (restaurant review – so good I reviewed twice)

…early on you’ll notice that the atmosphere of music and smoke coming in from the bar is kept to a minimum and the open view of the kitchen produces a welcoming aromatic front wafting through into the restaurant.

You’ll see contrasting elements to the bar - the cream walls, chandeliers and kitchen sideboards (complete with a scattering of bruschetta bread) will make you feel warm and cosy with the odd chance of a bright smile occuring.

Looking ahead to the forecast….The Bowler experience is unique because, as standard, it begins with a mild, foggy butternut squash mini-soup (or polenta and rocket for non-onion lovers) before steadily rising with the more aggressively-flavoured starters. These include the warm, flat pappardelle pasta with a strong gust coming in from the accompanying chorizo, roast king prawns and reduced balsamic sauce.

Moving into the ‘mains’-land….indulge yourself with the modern-Mediterranean meat wave: Strong-tasting currants and a drizzling of rich sauce help turn a tender, near-Moroccan lamb and spiced yoghurt into an agreeable evening. Also on the horizon, you may encounter some pleasant intervals of Argentinean rib-eye steak with sauted spinach, flat Portobello mushrooms and roast tomatoes. This is best combined with a touch of misty Argentinean Oltra Vida Malbec red to ensure the fullness of flavours. Across the menu you’ll also see spells of veal, sea bass and cod dishes with rocket, risotto and Saffron activity throughout.

For dessert….the deluge of Panettone bread-and-butter pudding showered in a delectable spiced Ricotta and chocotastic sauce will sweep through to those areas desperatley in need of some brightness.

In summary – the outlook is perfect for The Bowler because, despite being a young restaurant, it comes with a knowledgeable and charismatic staff. The owners have pedigree written all over them (not literally, of course) – they masterminded the award-winning Rocket in Acton. The installation of Rocket’s Italian head chef really puts the ‘Bo’ into The Bowler.

“Went into the bowler yesterday for lunch and was really surprised by the turn around of this pub, the food, drink choice and service were all excellent. I have walked by this pub for years as it was always dark, dingy and empty but after recently changing hands and being done up nicely it has a really friendly relaxing atmosphere. If you, like me have always just walked past this pub I suggest you give it a go”

“Where do i start! After being greeted at the door by a pompous, arrogant and just down right rude man, we were squeezed into a tiny table with barely enough room to breath, after waiting for twenty minutes to be even acknowledged we ordered, another 45 minutes later our food came out at fifteen minute intervals and was dumped on the table. Though the food wasn't too bad it wasn't great either, and cold, some undercooked! I visited this place around the same time last year and was fed some amazing fish cakes, and a delicious Duck salad, I am assuming that the kitchen staff has changed since then, and none the less for the worse. If i could give this place a negative rating I would. Avoid at all costs!”

“This place has changed hands more times than any other bar in the area - and once again they can't get it right! No atmosphere, awful service and thats being polite - the food was worse! This is not a gastro pub so they need to decided what they are and get on with it!”

“No heating! One hour to be served starter (soup)! Walked out after recieving no food after 75 minutes without any explanation. POOR!!!”

“what a disappointment. Their only culinary acheivement that we could see was making sausage, mash and gravy be utterly tasteless. Fish cakes were good, but somehow inauthentic, like reheated from frozen, albeit high-grade. Don't bother, there's 'way' better than this is our fine city.”

“Intitialy sceptical i was won over on my first visit to this brand new place. I have seen many come and go on this site but i hope this stays - the food was top notch - i had the gnocci romana, and the red snapper with prawns, my wife had the scollops with chorizo and tortilla and the rib eye and both were up there with any restaurant in the area. The staff were all new but my evening went smoothly, and i'm sure with a few tweeks this place will be a clerkenwell staple. Well done guys - this site needed this!”
