Top 10 things to know about Tsunami:

1) Situated at the quieter end of Clapham High Street, Tsunami Japanese restaurant has to compete with a number of trendy chains, but proves a classy joint serving top notch sushi with plenty of visual flair.

2) The restaurant has a golden-age, 1960s, James Bond feel, with dark walls, leather columns and gold trimmings. The low lighting makes for an intimate setting.

3) The whole place has the feeling of being out for a treat. It’s a perfect third date sort of place – a bit fancy for someone you don’t know yet, but impressive when you want to ramp things up.

4) Technically a Japanese restaurant, Tsunami offers mains that take a broader pan-Asian approach, including Korean specialities like stone bowl bi bim bap. The starters and the huge sushi menu also go off-piste, with an eye for unusual ingredient combinations, such as the foie gras and eel nigari. If you don’t mind sharing, ignore the (admittedly tasty looking) mains and focus on the starters and sushi.

5) Typical for a Japanese restaurant, the menu is long. If you’re feeling intimidated, ask the attentive, friendly staff what they’d order and just see what turns up.

6) The all-you-can-eat sushi lunch option, available Friday to Sunday, sounds like an absolute bargain. For a set price you order sushi in plates of three for an hour and 45 minutes. Limitless bubbles options are also available.

7) Looking back at my notes, I realised I’d written the word “fun” five times, “fancy” three times, and “so cool” once and underlined. Sushi has an inherent architectural element to it, and the restaurant makes use of this to really go for it when it comes to presentation. The volcano special is a great example, piling tempura prawn sushi up in a cone before covering it with a Korean-inspired curry sauce acting as lava.

8) Elsewhere on the menu it’s hard not to be impressed when your starter arrives on fire, so go for the grilled scallops in creamy spicy sauce if you want to show off.

9) A decent enough wine list, the booze menu really shines when it comes to the sake and Japanese whiskey selection. Tasting flights are available for both and reasonably priced, making for a fun way to end the meal.

10) Minor detail: the menu very clearly lays out the allergy information, a real bonus for all our celiac, dairy intolerant and allergic friends out there.

“I really enjoyed this food, it was while since I went but had a lovely evening - it was first date so even more exciting - hope it's still open as I recommended it to a friend.”

“Definitely a close second to Nobu in my books with better lighting and a much more relaxed atmosphere AND no time block for your table! Quality and presentation of the food is fabulous. A menu with variety that fulfilled the needs of a vegetarian, non-sashimi and non-fish eater in our party as well. The Oyster platter - ooooh! And be teased and pleased with the rich and delicious Unagi Fois-Gras Nigiri! The staff were friendly, attentive and highly entertaining. A nice touch with the decanter of hot Sake on the house whilst I was waiting for my cab. A firm favourite and highly recommended!”

“I consider most restaurants in London "poor" but I'm giving Tsunami 4 for good quality, good service and very pleasant sorroundings. There's also 20% off for dining before 7pm. A bargain.”

“I went here a few weeks ago for dinner and was pleasantly surprised - having just moved to Clapham recently I hadn't tried any sushi here yet. I had the sashimi platter which was very simple (as it should be) fresh and tasty. The steamed crab dumplings starter is really nice, extremely flavorful. The cocktails were lovely too. All of this made up for somewhat standoffish service, and the table next to us had a very interesting looking flaming scallop dish which I will definately order next time. Overall, I've had trouble finding quality sushi in London and find this place more than satisfactory, I'll definately go again.”
