The Stonhouse Review

The Stonhouse is featured in these Guides:

This is one of the closest gastropubs to my house in lovely Clapham Old Town and is one of the most talked-about by Claphamites, whether Northern, Southern or just a bit Common.

It sits away from the madness of Clapham High Street, where havoc hits the streets every weekend in the form of rugby lads, hen nights, Australians, muscle-bound gay boys and everything in between, staggering between The White House, Revolution, Two Brewers and Infernos (the list is pretty endless – if you've not been out in Clapham, you really need to top up your Oyster card and get cracking. And if you're living in North London don't even try to tell me it’s 'too far' – 15 minutes from Leicester Square, with tons of night buses back Norf).

The Stonhouse is easy to find, on the appropriately named Stonhouse Street, just off the High Street (closest tube: Clapham Common). What came first, the pub or the street? Maybe ask them when you arrive. Just turn left at the pool of sick/urine from Saturday night's madness and walk up towards what you'll soon relish as a beacon of peace and sophistication.

The atmosphere is as lively as the High Street, although more civilised, laid back and relaxed. Tables of yummy-mummies (another staple of Clapham) sit alongside yet more rugby-types, tucking into wine, beer and predominantly, big chunks of hearty food.

Meat; thinking back to my huge chunk of medium rare beef fillet is making my mouth bubble and foam. I'm just glad I'm in my room and not in public, or I'd be getting funny looks. Well, even funnier looks than normal. The Stonhouse is a meat-lover’s paradise – my beef fillet was stunning, as was the mushroomy, garlicy, peppery sauce to go with it. My date's springbok steak was also pretty top-notch (mouth bubbling again, at this rate I'll have to gnaw through my forearm just to get some sense of how meaty and juicy it was), with tasty bacon and pureed sweet potato, again with an awesome sauce.

Luckily, I had plenty of room for my totally satisfying main since my scallops with pasta starter disappointingly contained only three actual scallops, one of which I had to give to my date because he wanted a sample. Which is another point, the Stonhouse is a great place for a date – friendly, relaxed, just sophisticated enough and nobody will bat an eyelid if you’re gay, lesbian, trans or sitting with your thaibride.com – it's a laid-back, friendly place in an already laid-back, friendly part of town.

Stonhouse is as gastro and pubby as a gastropub is ever likely to be. It has that great food with pubby, low-key charm combination down pat. However, for those that prefer to sit at comfortable tables and chairs with linen tablecloths, the Stonhouse basic pub furniture might seem a bit lacking. It's totally fine, and there are a few nicer places to sit right at the back, but the tables are ever-so-slightly scruffy; or charming, as I like to think - they have history, character and a rustic feel that can be hard to come by in London. Like it's sister venues, Avalon in Clapham South and The Abbeville just off Clapham Common, The Stonhouse ignores the busyness of the capital, and opts for a much more relaxed rural vibe.

A great wine list ranging from pretty cheap but tasty to fairly expensive (though nothing over the top) was brought to us by an eccentric looking chap who forgot his corkscrew. A lot of the staff I've been served by at Stonhouse (I've been there a fair few times because they do a damn good lunch and brunch menu too) can be a bit scatty – if you're relaxed and in a good mood this just adds to the fun. If you're hungover and in desperate need of a coffee with egg's benedict that come out wrong three times, it can be a bit annoying. However, we were well looked after by our charming, cheerful waiter – I hope I have him again next time.

There's a nice outdoor space for the summer, and a stunning, roaring open fire for the colder months. Worth a visit for a meal, a few drinks, or even just popping in for a coffee on a Sunday morning. Every area in London should have a Stonhouse, I'm just glad I live so close to the original.
