The Belle Vue Review

Best for: Father-daughter evenings out, cosy pub dinners

Great: Clapham Common locations, Tiffany lamps

“My child”, said the father, “in twenty two years of life you have never taken me out for dinner. Now, don’t get me wrong, it has been a pleasure to finance your life, and I enjoy buying my daughter her tipple of choice when we meet in the pub. However, it would be pleasant, now that you are a woman of means, to pamper the old man somewhat.”

“Why father,” the child cried, “I never knew. I callously did not think. I am a fool, a scoundrel, a terrible and rather expensive companion. I am afraid I have not outgrown my childlike ability to ignore any form of payment when a parent is close at hand. This must be remedied at once!”

So hand in hand the daughter and the father travelled to Clapham Common for the final coming of age; a meal of equals.

Alighting from Clapham Common tube station, they spied across the road a gastropub called The Belle Vue. “This looks the very thing,” said the child, “let us eat, drink and be merry, Father”.

“Wait,” said he, “I suggest a cautionary glance through the window.”

“Father,” cried she, “I may no longer need your bankrolling but I clearly still need your wise council.”

They crossed the road and pressed their faces to the window.

“Hmmm, wooden floors and tables, how pleasant. And a mixed crowd, it looks rather cosy,” said he.

“I agree,” said she, “and I like these interesting lamps in the window. I think they might be called Tiffany lamps…however, they say that the proof of the pudding is in the tasting, so let us go taste some proof!”

Content in their choice of venue, the two waltzed in, ordered a bottle of wine and copious amounts of food and sat down to enjoy each others’ company for the evening.

Their conversation ranged widely; they discussed family, the environment and, of course, the food. In all they were harmonious. “How wonderful it is to be in a pub where you can hear your companion speak. Loud music seems to be a terrible epidemic in pubs these days,” said he.

“I completely agree,” said she, “I want to chat and giggle with a glass of something pleasant, not deafen myself. Try this,” she said, as she passed over her whitebait starter.

“Why, that is superb!” he said.

“I know” she replied, “I must confess, I always enjoy whitebait immensely, partly because I feel it is like a healthier version of chips as it uses fish rather then potatoes.”

“I think your logic may be somewhat at fault here, my dear, and I must add that your main, of steak and chips, which appears to be a whole cow and at least a field of potatoes, on a plate the size of a monster truck’s hubcaps, is not the healthiest.”

“You have a point, Father,” the daughter replied, burying her nose in the extremely acceptable Rioja. “Your main of sardines was infinitely healthier and delicious, yet it appears that to prevent me from heart complications, you have eaten many of my chips and tackled at least half the steak.”

“My dear”, he replied, his eyes filled with the tender love a father has for his child, “I would do anything for you”.
