The Abbeville Review

The Abbeville gastro-pub sits at the heart of Clapham’s ‘Abbeville Village,’ a pretty, peaceful but vibrant community a 5-10 minute walk from the tubes of Clapham Common and Clapham South, but a million miles away from the good-natured rowdiness and buzz of Clapham High Street.

On first glance The Abbeville looks just like a normal London pub that serves food – but on closer reflection it soon becomes clear that this is a very special find. A long polished wooden bar, stocked high with spirits, beers and an impressive wine list, sits on a raised level from the street. This leads down to what feels like an old country pub. There are lots of intimate nooks and crannies, and plenty of antique tables and chairs, each with their own personality. A trip here in the winter months would be heavenly, with pretty fireplaces dotted throughout the venue.

The night we visited was the Abbeville’s ‘relaunch’ party, and the menu sample platters were quite simply fantastic. Oysters in Bloody Mary shot glasses, stunning Monkfish and Black Pudding skewers and duck pâté and scrambled egg on Ciabatta soldiers were all superbly tasty and beautifully but simply presented. Everything was fresh, well-thought out and unique – combining originality with classy, classic flavours. There is a separate area specifically for dining, however the place doesn’t feel split into ‘pub area’ and ‘food area,’ with a great sense of flow and unity throughout.

The Abbeville’s atmosphere is immensely friendly, with locals making up a large part of the crowd – but far from feeling cliquey, the regulars are charming, chatty and fun, adding to the laid-back, unique vibe as much as the lovely food and characterful pictures that cover the walls (my personal favourite being an old black and white print of a giant cow and wistful young woman – worth the trip just to see her expression).

The Abbeville isn’t the kind of place you’d find easily if you hadn’t heard of it already – its location off the relative beaten track (in terms of Clapham at least) leaves it slightly isolated – unlike the bars and pubs of Clapham High Street and Clapham South where you can go from place to place in seconds, the Abbeville is pretty much alone. However this is part of what makes the Abbeville so special. It’s a bit more of a secret, and that makes it even more of a delight when you find it. It has the sophistication of a top-class London venue combined with the vibe of a relaxed country retreat – rare for London, and maybe worth keeping to yourself.

“I went here on a Monday night and it was really busy with a buzzing atmosphere. The burger & Chips was tasty. The waiter was very attentive and made us an amazing Irish Coffee. We used our taste card and got 50% off food, great value.”

“Great local pub - friendly staff, good food & wine, real ales. Nice mix of old regulars and younger crowd. There's a fire in the winter, sit outside in the summer.”

“One word – dire. Having traipsed some way to get here, we were in need of a hearty Sunday lunch. The first shocker was the prices – £11 for a pub roast is plain cheeky. Food was cold and sent back. It returned after a long wait, cold again. Roast was ok but nothing special and certainly not worth the hefty price. A goat's cheese canneloni at £9 should have been great but was actually disgusting. Some of the staff were a bit snotty when we said the food was cold. Manager redeemed things but he could hardly argue when we refused to pay. It is a nice pub to look at but they desperately need to sort the food out. Not worth a special journey - pop in (for a drink) if you're local.”

"My Gulascheintopf war perfekt and so was the Weissbier. I was in Kingston Steins. I do have a few suggestions for decor and table. 1. you need a little jar of toothpicks on the table to get meat out from..." Which venue is this?

Hated

"I visited browns alone after work and got convinced to spend an hour in the “VIP” room with Jennifer - which is just a corner of the private dance area - no privacy at all. I essentially paid £500 for..." Which venue is this?
