Rise46 Review

Book a table at Rise46

Best for: surreal tea evenings with your posh friends; embracing your inner child.

Great: and massive selection of cocktails.

When there are so many different cocktails to choose from, it’s important you choose your weapon carefully. At Rise 46 - a cocktail bar tucked away from the bright lights of Clapham High Street and just a short walk from Clapham Junction on the trendy Battersea Rise - there are over 45 different cocktails to choose from.

Depending on what kind of a person you are – sophisticated and grown up; watching your waistline; or only as young as the man you feel – your cocktail choice will differ greatly from the next person’s.

Read on for our handy guide to choosing the best Rise 46 cocktail for your personality.

FOR THE CHILD AT HEART
Do you find people falling over quite funny? Do you still enjoy swinging as high as possible on the swings? Do you get drawn towards sweetshops like a moth to a flame? If so, then the grown-up cocktails from the ‘Sweet Shop’ section of Rise 46’s cocktail menu will tickle your candy-loving fancy. Take a trip down memory lane and reminisce about days gone by and the wonderful frivolity of childhood.

Those who remember fondly the ‘Pick n Mix’ sweets once sold for a penny or two in every newsagent and corner shop will also fondly remember the popular foamy yellow bananas. Fans of these sweets will love the cocktail Bubble Gum, a creamy frothy blend of Archers, Crème de Bananas and Cranberry Juice, that comes with lots of spongy banana sweets to enjoy. For the chocoholics amongst us, the 46er might be the cocktail for you. It’s a diet-busting mixture of Frangelico, Baileys, chocolate liqueur, Kahlua, milk and cream. Pencil in that gym visit for the next morning and get dunking the honeycomb chocolate chunks into the sinful drink.

FOR THE JANUARY DIETER
Did you overindulge at Christmas? Did you spend more time rocking around the Quality Street box than the Christmas tree? If you’re part of the millions who made a New Year’s resolution to lose extra pounds, then you’ve probably put any thoughts of cocktail indulgence to the back of your mind. Cocktails are widely recognised as sugary, diet-unfriendly, sugar/cream/calorie-laden drinks.

However, Rise 46 has the solution. Reschedule in those cocktail nights with your mates and stick to the ‘Skinny’ menu of five cocktails, described as “low cal, zero guilt, dancing juice”. They contain at least one of your five fruit and vegetables a day! The cocktails contain Agave nectar, a naturally sweeter alternative to sugar with a low glycaemic index. The Jose Margarita, a blend of Jose Cuervo, freshly squeezed lime and Agave nectar, totals only 90 calories; guilt-free cocktail consumption that fits in with your New Year’s resolutions. What could be better?

FOR THE SOPHISTICATED
Do you consider yourself a bit of a sophisticated lady or lad? Do you like to partake in a little political banter over teas served in fancy china? Then the Rise 46 selection of tea trays might be just what you’re looking for.

The spirit used in each of the premium teas is the deluxe Beefeater 24, and the flavours echo the fragrant Japanese and Chinese teas. You can order tea for two or four, and they are served in china teapots adorned with cucumber bites. How very posh! The Almond Iced Tea is a sophisticated blend of Beefeater 24, Orgeat syrup, fresh lemon, sugar and green tea, and slides down rather easier than the average cup of green tea.

For a rather surreal evening with your highbrow group of friends, get suited up and pour yourself a cup of fancy and boozy tea in the snazzy cocktail area in Rise 46.

The cocktail bar is unlike the others on the Clapham circuit. Contrary to its dizzying cocktail menu (popcorn is on the menu, along with a whole selection of sweet shop-inspired cocktails), the bar oozes an adult type of classiness, with black and white photographs of silent film stars hanging on the walls and velvet cushioned benches and stools to lounge on.

It’s thin. Anyone with a wider disposition (I was glad I’d gone before and not after the mass consumption of Christmas) would find it a squeeze to get in and out of the toilets, and the seating arrangement is such that you get to know the groups or couples next to you quite well without quite meaning to. It’s impossible not to overhear next door’s conversations. However, the layout almost adds to the overall laidback 1920s chic feel.

Whatever kind of person you are, or whatever kind of person you feel like on the night out – whether you feel like sophisticated, candlelit conversation dressed in tweed and sipping tea or whether you feel like regressing back to your early childhood (and getting rather tipsy with it) - the boudoir-style cocktail speakeasy that is Rise 46 can cater specifically for you.

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
