Mishmash Review

mishmash n. a confused collection or mixture.

Tastefully kitted out in 70’s style décor with projectors screening Barbarella (incidentally, these are used for showing football matches too), brocade wallpaper, large spherical lights that hypnotically change colour and comfy stumpy sofas; it’s less kitsch and more cool.

Mishmash has a short menu of antipasti, charcuterie and cheese platters from £10 to £12 but on the Friday night we were there no one was eating. Instead, follow what the nice crowd of grown-ups in the ‘sea of Battersea’ do and order off the comprehensive cocktail list (most cost around a fiver, they’re also 2-for-1 during Happy Hour 5 to 8pm).

A delicious brandy Alexander was rich yet not too sweet, a screaming orgasm tasted like ice-lolly concentrate and a cheeky champagne mojito was enough to flood the capillaries in my face. Red faced and very happy, it was only a matter of time/ booze before we got up to dance/ flail limbs.

Sure enough by 11pm once the stumpy chairs had been cleared to make some space people were jiggling about. Music at mishmash differs depending on which night you go, Friday was 80s/ 90s night with stuff from Orbital and De La Soul (had there been T-Pau or, god forbid, Big Fun this review might be entirely different).

If you want to get into mishmash after 10pm on a Friday or Saturday you should definitely consider calling up and putting yourselves on the guest list because despite its location (it’s a fair hike from Clapham Junction) the herd of late-twenty-early-thirtysomethings don’t half flock here.

My mate Toby loved it and has said he’ll be back. Though whether this is because he liked the ‘posh bog roll’ and the ‘attentive staff’ or because he got asked by a lass at the bar to “pinch my bottom” is debatable. However, I do agree with his positive feedback, despite the dictionary definition there is no confusion with mishmash. It’s pretty straightforward fun. more

“Really good bar, friendly bar staff and bouncer which really made a difference as you don't often get either! Good music and 2-for-1 on cocktails before 9 on Saturday which was great. Reserved an area for my birthday and had a really good night - would recommend.”

“This bar is always busy! Amazing really considering its quite far from Clapham Junction. Mishmash is one of those bars you either love or hate and after you have been there once your mind is made up. I think its a great place to have a laugh with your mates without having to put up with the pretention that you would find in other parts of London. Just need to sort out the doormen.”

“Reserved an area for my 25th this previous Saturday. My friends were all on the guestlist and were able to get in without any problems. Mishmash proved to be an inspired choice. The atmosphere was amazing - everyone seemed up for it which was exactly what i wanted on my birthday. Brilliant.”

“My mates are Mishmash regulars and always tell me how much they love it! I can see what the previous reviewer is saying - it does get hot and sweaty, especially in the baking summer heat, although we sat outside on the terrace and it was fine. I do disagree with him when he says the cocktails are bad - my mojito was superb. Not for everyone this place admittedly but I had fun.”

“I'm sorry, but am i taking crazy pills?? I'm not being a snob, but how anyone can say that this place is a good cocktail bar must come be mad. Mish Mash is a great place if you're between 21-25, don't really care about quality and consider a good saturday night to consist of cocktail jugs, loud, full on music and sweat. If however, you'd like a decent cocktail (i.e. not one chokka block with sugar), something nice to eat and a comfortable, lively environment then this place certainly isn't for you.”

“Always a laugh - was rammed during the football which made for a great atmosphere but tricky to get served! Hopefully get back to normal now. Best in Clapham for a decent cocktail. ”

“Went to my friend's leaving party last weekend at Mishmash and had a great time. We all really enjoyed ourselves. Got there early to take advantage of the Happy Hour and downed a load of cocktails. Had a good old boogie later on, think it was 80's & 90's. It did get a bit too busy and the music could have been louder but overall I really liked the place and will be back.”

“Went on a saturday night after reading positive reviews but was surprised to enter a sweat box. The sound system was poor, drowned out by conversations of the packed punters and the bar was a tough place to get to. Mishmash is one of those joints where you have to buy two rounds at once. Can't work out the hype, clearly a lot of the reviews are written by the owners of mish mash or by folk who left the bar drunk and broke out their laptops when still under the influence. There are a million better bars, even in the Clapham area.”

“I had my birthday party at Mishmash last weekend and had the best time! We reserved an area and all my friends were put on the guestlist so the late-comers got in no problem. This place is great if you want to have a good old party. The funky wallpaper, funky staff, delicious coocktails and classic party music make this the ulitmate place for weekend fun!”

“I've been going to Mishmash since it first opened and it gets more and more popular every week. And it's not difficult to see why. It's such a great space, very very cool, cocktails are fab, staff are funky yet professional (really know their stuff), music is great fun and the door staff are very approachable. I'd just recommend getting there early on the weekend as it's so popular.”

“Wow what a mixed set of reviews. Myself and two of my girlfriends had our birthdays at MM last week. I thought it was wonderful, the decor, the music the drinks just everything. We had a reserved area just by the dance floor which was perfect. It is a very busy venue (on Sats anyway) but if you are up like we were it is great. Where did they get the weird looking Dj with huge sideburns from? Will be back.”

“I was at MishMash on Saturday night for a friend's birthday. She had reserved an area for 40 people in theory, but was only given around 8 seats. Next to us a party of 70 had been allocated around 14 seats - so it goes without saying that this bar is extremely over crowded and people on your guest list don't get any special treatment - in fact someone on ours waited an hour to get in! On the positive side, the happy hour is very good value and the cocktails were good. This bar has potential (like old films being showed), but sadly the staff are rude and I estimated that when the bar capacity was at around 300 there were only 4 staff serving! I waited 20 minutes at the bar to be served. The music was also turned up around 8pm to the point you couldn't hear the person next to you. So if you like a bar where you can't move, can't speak to your friends and can't get served, you'll like it! My advice would be to get there early for the happy hour and then move on!”

“This is probably the worst place I have ever been in my life! Don't do it! I reserved an area for myself and 25 of my friends for my birthday. I couldn't find my table so asked the barman if he could help, but he seemed incapable of communicating and just told me to get out of the way. Then when I found my table, they took away the chairs. I was not told this when booking! It was a complete waste of time, when I could have gone somewhere that was actually good. Really bad service, really bad space and completely money obsessed managment. You should be ashamed MishMash! ”

“First time I went to mishmash. Thought it was great. The wallpaper and multi coloured seating are a scream. Music and drinks are a hoot.Top venue all round if you want a fun night out. Only winge is that they only do doubles. Also very important to get a reserved area or guestlist on Sats judging by the queue (you can book them online very easily thankfully).”

“I had my engagement party at mishmash on a Saturday. I loved the way it was so well organised. We had a reserved area and guestlist all arranged online. When we arrived there was a placard on the table and the manager came over and gave us all shots of tequila and sambucca (not sure if this always happens!) and congratulated me on getting engaged. The cocktails were lovely and after knocking back a few (!) we all started to let our hair down and had a good old boogie. The music may be naff but we loved it. Mishamsh is the perfect place for party groups especially if you like it busy busy busy with lots of atmosphere.”

“I love the place. I had mine and my boyfriends 30th birthday here on the weekend. We arranged a reserved area for 30 of us online which was really simple and we all got email confirmations- why do'nt more clubs use this system. When we got to Mishmash there were two tables reserved for us at the front and we got a complimentary bottle of champagne too from a nice SA guy whose name I forget. He made super cocktails too which were half price early. The music and atmosphere was brilliant all night and we all had a great time - super DJ playing the just the right mix of cheesy 80s/90s. Whilst it was really busy they had lots of bar staff so it was no problem getting served although I feel a bit sorry for the waitresses who were rushed off their feet (food was a bit slow too). The loos are fab - where did they get the crazy wallpaper from My grumbles are that it is a bit hard to get too - a powerwalk from Clapham Junction (or take my advice and get a cab) . Also it is hard to eat after 10pm because of all the people and the dancing. Finally I know it is a cocktail bar thing but why do all the upmarket bars only serve doubles - if you are starting early it is too easy to drink too much (although I suppose that is the idea)? Will be back for sure.”

“Too crowded, naff decor, 30 min wait to get a below par cocktail. An over-priced student union!”

“I went last Saturday and loved it. We had a reserved area and guestlist and even at 8.30pm the place was buzzing. This must be the best place in Clapham if you like a big night out with a smart 20-35 crowd. Drinks were fabulous although a bit pricey. Music was retro 80/90s but not too cheesy - well maybe a bit. Lots of people had come for birthdays and there was a really friendly atmosphere. Will def. be back for my birthday.”

“Don't go on a Saturday! It's a great looking bar but the service was slow (they couldn't cope with the numbers, especially when people order numerous different cocktails!), the music pretty average and the place so packed you couldn't even move let alone dance. When you have to push your way through to get to the bar or the loo and people start getting a bit stroppy you know it's time to leave. Heard quite a few people moaning about the number of people the bouncers were letting in and deciding to head off elsewhere. Place needs to limit the numbers, sort out the service and emulate the chilled out atmosphere of sister bar the Living Rooms in Brixton - when it gets that right it'll be a great night out.”

“Avoid this place at all costs. Went on a Saturday night and it was completely rammed. There must have been 500 people in a room fit for half that number. Drinks take ages to order. You can't move. Everyone in there was complaining about the overcrowding. The bar staff were nearly in tears and were cocking up drinks orders. ”

“Mishmash has to be one of the best new bars in South London. Wild wallpaper (orchids in a bar?) with funkadelic lights. Great music. I booked a reserved area for my birthday private party on a Saturday and it was fantastic. The DJ plays 80/90s and classic house with lots of stuff I knew. Great atmosphere albeit very busy. Excellent cocktails and a late licence till 2am to boot. Definitely make sure you get on the guestlist if coming Friday or Saturday to avoid the queue.”
