Le Bouchon Bordelais Review

Serving good old-fashioned French cuisine in elegant surroundings, Le Bouchon Bordelais in Clapham Junction offers no surprises. Walk-able from the train station (which is unexpectedly still within zone 2), it sits amid a row of restaurants on Battersea Rise, adjoined to its sister bar, through which we entered.

The restaurant is a decent representation of a Parisian brasserie with dark wood, mirrors and red furnishing. The lights are dim and the atmosphere quiet and a little formal. The staff are unashamedly French and polite but in that brisk, French-waiter style that made me try to thank them in their mother tongue (which I don’t speak).

Le Bouchon Bordelais is a big pull with the suits. Its classic menu and French theme provide an air of authority and no doubt the moneyed commuters of Clapham will enjoy the intimate atmosphere. Staff leave a sensible amount of time between courses and enquire before bringing out the next.

Getting off to an underwhelming start, the French bread that arrived was an unenthusiastic take on the bakery tradition and the butter un-spreadably refrigerated. However, the recommended Merlot went down rather more smoothly.

From a menu of traditional starters we went for a goat’s cheese and pastry affair and the special board’s Foie Gras. Though, of course, the option was there for the good old French staple of snails. The goat’s cheese pastry was a good mix of sweet sauce with the tartness of the cheese though the cubes of gelatine that arrived with the Foie Gras were, perhaps, an acquired taste.

For mains, the classics ruled once more and we opted for a medium-rare steak and the Southern French classic, bouillabaisse. The restaurant is proud of using high-quality ingredients with the steak sourced from a single herd, and it does indeed have a heavenly, melt-in-the-mouth texture. The bouillabaisse is an excellent introduction to the French palate and in respect for tradition we finished with a board of French cheeses for dessert.

The food is unfailingly well presented and expertly cooked though with each course I was left feeling it lacked a certain je ne sai quoi. Our fellow diners are a well-healed bunch and the candlelight suggests the place thrives on very special occasions for the suburban locals. It does everything it sets out to do, there’s just not much va va voom.

“I'll keep it to the point: - Although the place was quiet, it took ages to be served, most of the time we were ignored by the waitors. - We had to ask for the wine menu, as we clearly were not going to be offered it. - The wine bottle turned up with a big crack down the side, they did replace it without question. - The Starters were mixed, the goats cheese was great, the tempura prawns were soggy and undercooked. - The main course (steaks) were fantastic - The dessert was dull (Profiter Rolls) - The lighting in the restaurant was unbeliveably bright, it was like being caught in a spotlight for the whole meal, hense my poor Atmosphere score. Basically a very dissapointing experience for a lot of money. I will not be going there again.”

“I'd been recommended Le Bouchon by a friend and had always been intrigued by what lay behind the typically french red exterior. I was told it was not overly cheap, the food was excellent and the staff speak in french (unless you can't!) This all rang true - the food was good, reflected in the prices, et on parlait en francais - but I won't be coming back here. Primarily due to the atmosphere exuded by the management and staff. - the owner/manager is the epitomy of french arrogance. he saunters around, hands clasped behind back, with a look of "how lucky these people are to be dining here" - the service was slow and things arrived at different times. - the food was not hot. - staff are excellent at refilling your glass, but had to be reminded for cutlery This COULD be an excellent restaurant, but the manager needs to select and train better staff. He also needs to welcome customers as though they were his last. This one is.”
