Bread and Roses Review
Slightly off the beaten track, hidden down one of Clapham’s Residential streets, the Bread and Roses caters for the more chilled locals and theatre goers in this part of South London.
An unexpected garden, overgrown with bamboo is reached through a glass room, and good food (that perhaps suggests a move towards a gastro pub) along with the function room upstairs are but a few of the many qualities of this laid back bar. But be warned, peaceful Sundays may be disturbed by the number of children, encouraged by the toy box in the corner.
Born from the 'Workers Beer Company' the Bread & Roses continues with the same ethos that this company stands for. The pub takes its name from a song written during a strike of women textile workers in Lawrence Massachusetts, USA in 1912. Twenty seven thousand women went on strike and marched for eleven weeks to improve their working conditions. Their banners called for bread and roses and a poet among them, James Oppenheim, wrote these words, which went on to become a famous song for women trade unionists everywhere. This pub is named in recognition of their struggle and the struggle of workers everywhere for a better quality of life for themselves and their families....read more

“The bar itself is nothing special, however on a thursday night they have a limited food special for that day and it was refreshing to have it served in front of you by someone who really cares what it looks like on the plate. The food itself was very good and excellent value. Bar staff were friendly and attentive, and overall Bread & Roses is well worth a visit.”

“This should be the evolution of the drinking establishment. Nowadays too many places are turning into 'trendy' cocktail/wine bars where you feel you there is a dress code or you have to part of some sort of 'in' crowd in order to just get something to quench your thirst and sit down with your mates or they look like it should be full of old men talking about the good old days while smoking their pipe. Bread and Roses is something different. It's your local and especially so as it's off the beaten track but it's been done up. It mananges to retain that local comfy feel yet inside the seating has moved away from chintzy worn chairs to a smart mauve and pine look without being over done. The walls are plain (thank god they didn't feel they needed to fill it with cheap books, crapy B&W nostalgic photos, spades & other garden tools or nonsense art work!) which works well, giving it a easy going feel. The best thing about this pub is the beer garden. It's way from the road anyway so if you decide to sit out front you're not eating car fumes with each mouthful, but round the back it's fantastic, with a conservatory leading out to a bamboo garden. There is pinic bench seating and chairs and tables so take your pick.
Enough about the great new interior and the wonderful feel of the place and on to the reason why you'd be there in the first place. Drinks are your normal averge pub with a cocktail menu thrown in for good measure and to please the Claphamite crowd but there are soft and hot drinks for the weekends when it's full of families. There is also a small but reasonable food menu which tastes good and does the job well. Best of all it's their banana bread beer, which you get in it's special glass, if you go there you have to try it, it's wonderful stuff.
This is a great pub, all the better as it can cater for after work drinks, food breaks and families.”
