The Bolingbroke Review
The Bolingbroke is featured in these Guides:
Top 10 things to know about The Bolingbroke:
1) Just a 13-minute stroll from Wandsworth Common station, you’ll find The Bolingbroke, one of the many bars and restaurants on Northcote Road.
2) It’s Thursday evening, time to put the pram and highchair away and head for a long and strong one. It’s nearly summer so you can walk home. Just remember to pay the babysitter upon return.
3) As you approach, spot the gillets and engagement rings shining through the window. Not to mention the well-trained handbag size poodles sitting patiently under the table. So yes; young, trendy parent thirtysomethings, this is the place for you.
4) The interior has an open-air garden feel to it. The pastel green wooden panelling on the walls and garden centre outdoor lighting scheme really works. This outdoorsy design carries through to the cool, well-spaced white-wash brick dining room at the rear; perfect for large bookings (birthdays, engagement, anniversaries and alike)
5) The staff are exceptionally welcoming and laid back. It must be that alfresco décor.
6) Share an ice cold bottle of San Vigilio, Pinot Grigio Blush rose, which works well with the scallop and chicken liver parfait starters; reasonably priced also, just £7 for a large glass. ??
7) The menu is geared towards those who like traditional British food. Smarter than pub food, but not so fancy that your starter is over in one mouthful. The shredded ham hock salad is recommended to start, followed by the pan-seared sea bass for main. You can always pinch your husband’s chips because he’s bound to order the steak! ??
8) Nutella is for Pancake Day? Not at the Boilingbroke – you must try the Nutella gnocchi with banana ice cream. The flavours are oozing with childhood nostalgia. The waitress recommends the banoffee pie from the specials list. The flavours are great but the biscuit base too thin and crumbly; it needs more biscuit, please!
9) An interesting fact for you, The Bolingbroke is actually named in honour of Henry St. John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke, the brilliant politician and reckless rake, who spent the early and final years of his life in this part of Battersea.
10) The Bolingbroke is a fantastic local's pub that produces honest and delicious pub food, and it’s incredibly reasonable given its trendy location. Make sure you end with a creamy gingerbread martini; a guaranteed pleaser....read more

“I went in this well heeled local to ask about a potential booking for 30 - a local parents' group for a Pre-Xmas dinner. I had one of the rudest exchanges I have ever come across with the manager - as a local that lives literally around the corner, I recognised the manageress. Dismissive, disinterested, but even if you had no interest or or availability, I would not have made my disdain so plain to a local customer. basically just turned and walked away mid-enquiry. Dreadful. I am astonished.”

“I went here once as we were passing through the area but i wouldn't make an effort to go back again. Considering the avalon is so popular I wonder how the managers aren't making the bolingbroke just as good.”

“The sister pubs The Abbeville, The Stonhouse and Avalon all share a warm atmosphere and are pleasant places for a drink. Unfortunately they also share food that is overpriced and average quality with little in the way of vegetarian options. Whilst the other pubs are on the whole well run, I found the staff at this pub in particular to be rude & inefficient. There are plenty of better places to eat or drink nearby and I suggest you choose one of them instead!”

“Its a very nice pub, however I would not rush back to eat. We recently had Sunday lunch in there in the room at the back. The music was so loud we had to ask for it to be turned down three times and it was hard core rock. Not the most appropriate music for lunch time. We waited a long time for our food, however when it did arrive it was very good. However the loud music and the fact the room was very hot would put me off going back.”

“For years I have bemoaned the absence of a decent gastro-pub on Northcote Road and so was excited at the prospect of The Bolingbroke. So far though, it has been a bit of a disappointment. They seem unable to serve their real ales (TT Landlord and Deuchars) in good condition, and our first meal there last night was a real let-down. The attractive menu was promising, with much made of the provenance of the ingredients, but the execution was frankly poor. Stale bread did not augur well. Scallops to start were fine though the pea puree could have been cold mushy peas and the acompanying ham was cooked to a toothbreaking cinder. Belly pork main was flaccid except for the seperate piece of crackling, one end of which was again horribly overcooked. Sea bass somehow contrived to have the appearance and texture of rollmops. The unmentioned dishes were no better than OK. The next table rejected their roast beef with trimmings. Service though was faultless and charming.”
