Bison & Bird Review

Book a table at Bison & Bird

Bison & Bird is featured in these Guides:

Best for: Nibbles to soothe a hungover soul; post work happy hour; pre-boogie warm up.

Great: Signature cocktails; towering burgers; people watching.

The night was ominous. Great drops plummeted from a leaden sky, feeding the inky black puddles which licked hungrily at our heels. Vast leaves whipped our legs. The wind screamed.

Like two little pigs scurrying two by two through a shadowy forest, we trotted quickly down Clapham Southside, avoiding the gaze of huffy puffy wolves.

And just as the wild waters threatened to whip us off our trotters and carry us far away, we saw it. Glowing through the gloom, a sanctuary, swaying on the current.

Not the ark, but almost. The Bison and Bird. If Noah had been a little more hungry, I’m sure he’d have built it this way.

Past the bulldogs at the door, vast packs were already merry inside this dim-lit sports bar; rearing beneath the antlered light fittings, preening in gold-gilded mirrors.

An ape gestured humorously to his tribe, beating his chest in cocky display. They chattered back, swinging long brotherly arms around his shoulders, scratching his head. Females observed quizzically.

Round the corner baboons swung, with rather too much bottom on show, curious eyes darting from pack to pack.

Hyenas shrieked and a panther, sleek in tight black leather, resided languorously and lazily on a stool, bored by her easy prey.

We’d entered the urban jungle at 8pm on a Saturday night, and it was hunting hour. The watering hole was teeming, and we were hesitant. This was the young Clapham crowd at its most hungry, pulling at the leash, baying for fun. But as two little pigs eager for nourishment might, we bravely shuffled through.

Top of the agenda: cocktails, a Bison and Bird speciality. A new signature list has just been launched. Ranging from the cool whiskey-based option served in quirky tin mugs, to creamy delights - heaven to a feline eye and whiskery nose - they’re the perfect aperitif to a walk on the wildside.

Next, food. Not, I would admit, the usual basis of a Saturday night at Bison and Bird (eating’s cheating?), instead, wonderfully enticing after a hard day foraging, perfect on a Saturday in front of the match or at Sunday roast o’clock before an afternoon snooze. But, well, piggies never turn up their shiny noses.

We started with sharing dishes, three for £12. Salt and pepper squid with sweet chilli sauce made us actually squeal, grilled flatbread and hummus was dipping heaven, and marinated feta and olives, our ‘light’ choice, was colossal. The cute field mouse serving giggled. These are hippo-sized portions.

Next stop, burgers. I opted for The Squealer – mildly cannibalistic - a mass of 7oz pork patty, pulled pork, bacon, chorizo and cheese in a toasted brioche bun with fries and red pepper ketchup. My companion went for The Spaniard, a 7oz beef and chorizo patty, grilled Morcilla and Serrano ham with a smoked paprika mayo. The herbivore option - a roast sweet potato, aubergine, red pepper and Halloumi medley with ‘sun spanked’ tomato pesto - sounded equally tempting, and a little naughty. Honestly, some of the best burgers this side of the Masai Mara.

And if you’re feeling a woolly mammoth kind of hungry, there’s The London 2012 Burger too. All 2012 calories of it. (Turn left for the gym).

Our little pink chops enjoyed a peach and amaretto crème brulee to finish, and we were pleasantly surprised. Bison and Bird may be a sports bar first and foremost, widescreen TVs aplenty, but the food is a class above the norm. Seriously tasty, genuinely interesting, locally sourced and home cooked, it’s been carefully thought through.

Back in the jungle, the mating rituals began, calls echoing over cheesy retro tunes. A wolf circled our table. Was he eying us or our fries? A pretty cockatoo fluffed feathers in the darkened window pane. Eyes darted and glanced, and glanced back again. Manes were shaken; chests beaten.

The two little piggies felt too full to join. What can we say? We come from a long line of greed.

We’ll come again though, beat the jungle drums. I’m a restaurant critic in a sports bar, but I’m not crying ‘Get me out of here’.

“Not a bar you'd usually associate with a quiet lunch but I've just come back from a decent cous cous, roast parsnip, and feta salad for only a fiver at lunchtime. Loads of comfy space too. And free wifi. Handy.”
