B@1 (Be at One) Review

Book a table at B@1 (Be at One)

Best for: scream-inducing cocktails; after-work AND pre-going out drinks.

Great: playlist; range of cocktails; bar for girls AND boys to enjoy.

What is it about cocktails that makes women shriek with delight at their mere mention? Even those who have sworn off alcohol for the foreseeable future seem to forget all plans of detoxing and penny-saving once the notion of cocktails is floated before them. Honestly, it’s a pity that they aren’t generally thought of as more manly concoctions; if men were to ask a potential love-interest out for cocktails, rather than simply ‘a drink’, it would doubtless prove a more tempting invitation for many a reluctant lady.

B@1 in Clapham has perhaps gone some way in reversing the cocktail’s more feminine associations; although with a menu featuring drinks named ‘Spiced Poo’ and ‘Cuban Pussy’, it is perhaps debatable as to whether or not it is a change for the better. Nevertheless, my guest and I ‘manned up’ and tried both of the aforementioned cocktails on our visit to this venue (both drinks being two of the unique creations that have been designed exclusively for the B@1 menu) and, admittedly, they went down a treat.

The B@1 catalogue of cocktails is notoriously extensive; so much so that it can be a little bewildering whilst still sober. Luckily, staff at the Clapham branch are particularly helpful, and willing to make recommendations based on your own particular preferences. Alternatively, the Sunday to Saturday 3-hour Happy Hour – or app-based and bartender activated alternative, known as ‘Appi Hour – give you plenty of time to take a more ‘trial and error’ approach to finding your perfect pitcher, and without spending a fortune.

Whilst other drinks are available, it is the cocktails which appear to catch the eye of the majority of B@1’s patrons, despite this inevitably meaning that most are in for a short queue at the bar. After all, whether you’re inclined to stick with more familiar favourites, or happy to put your taste-buds to the test with some of this bar’s more peculiar creations, flicking through the intriguingly-named list of options is all part of the fun.

Although the B@1 signature cocktails might be some of the more original alcoholic blends on offer, it’s easy to be enticed by the many twists which this bar offers on more conventional concoctions. The Maple Margarita, for example, expertly blends Cuervo Traditional Tequila with lemon juice, apple juice and maple syrup for a refreshing drink that’s nowhere near as sickly sweet as you might suspect. We also sampled B@1’s Dark and Stormy variation, Stormier Seas, which swaps its usual dark rum for Kraken’s spiced variety, and mixes with ginger beer and lime for a slightly fiery, but very drinkable creation.

Adding further masculinity to the concept of the cocktail, the bar is decked out entirely in black – walls, tables, chairs, the lot – and lit largely by red backlights and table candles. It might sound like an interior which walks the fine line between sexy and seedy, but the dusky decor seems to be working it’s magic during our visit: a group of glammed-up ladies are seated to our right, whilst what could quite easily be half of a rugby team turn up to form a huddle at the bar. Thankfully, large ceiling fans circle above us and stop anyone from getting too hot under the collar (something of a godsend, I imagine, come summer).

The music, it has to be said, is perfect. The early-evening playlist side-steps the temptation for full-on cheese, and instead muddles its ‘80s crowd-pleasers with a mix of ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll classics. With tunes by everyone from James Brown to the Beach Boys, you’ll find yourself wanting to sing along, without actually feeling like you’ve accidently stumbled upon on a mid-week hen night.

The dress code is very much after-office-chic, with lipgloss being urgently applied in the loos and collars being unbuttoned all round, giving this bar a much more relaxed vibe than you might hope to find closer to central London. Patrons are either on their way home or on their way out, and whilst the Clapham Common branch of the B@1 cocktail bar might not be the final destination for many, it’s certainly not a bad place to find yourself passing through. Now excuse me whilst I let out an excited shriek. A girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do.

“The b@1 bar in Clapham is a pretty cool place to head with your friends after work, especially during happy hour! It's quite small inside but very trendy and all the bar staff are really friendly. The cocktails are tasty and there are loads to choose from, prices are average but visiting in happy hour is an excellent way to get your evening started!”

“We visited this bar for a colleague's birthday drinks, and the friday night atmosphere was great - perfect to kick-start a party! With a mixed bag of people, this branch of B@1 managed to keep everyone happy, especially with such a huge choice of drinks available. It is, however, far too easy to rack up a large bill at the bar - especially once happy hour's over.”
