The Old Red Cow Review

The Old Red Cow is featured in these Guides:

I always get into trouble in the Red Cow; no not the bouncer worrying sort or THAT sort (worse luck), just a state of forgetfulness that results in me rummaging in my wallet to find a business card so that I can remind myself of who I am (or supposed to be that evening). This condition is wholly attributable to this establishment selling Oranjeboom, one of the most effective WMD's ever to come out of Holland.

So with my lack of recollection(s) in mind, what's the Red Cow like? Glancing up at the theme description on this website it states that its ‘traditional’. This makes it a bit of an anomoly round the Barbican area which seems to have been victim to an invasion of chain pubs and ‘it’ bars. I suspect the Red Cow has seen many of these ‘trendy’ places come and go; its stood there for quite some time - 1854 according to the blurb on the hoarding outside and has had the odd famous regular; Peter Ustinov used to enjoy a tipple or two there.

Inside you get pretty much what you'd expect; wooden floors, tables and stools arranged over two floors. As well as the aforementioned Dutch Debaucher a good mix of lagers and ales can be found including Hurlimanns, Shepherds Neame and Spitfire. Bar food and snacks are also available.

For preference, I go upstairs, where there are several large tables and the staff don't seem to mind how you rearrange the furniture. Indeed the staff are excellent, always quick on the pull and ready to help if you run out of hands at the bar. Mind you if you do go upstairs be warned that the toilets are in the basement and what might seem to be leisurely stroll for relief can turn into a bit of a race (though thus far never a ‘Mission Impossible’).

The early clientele tend to be escapees from the offices in the area; all suits and loosened ties (dishevellment appears to be in direct correlation to time spent there). Naturally, this means that the busiest time for Ye Olde Red Cow is between 5.30 and 8 pm; though later on locals appear and the place remains lively until closing time.

In an area seemingly infested with mod, chain bars the Red Cow’s normality makes it exceptional, what you'd expect a proper British boozer to be; long may it stand there.

“Exceptionally good food in sumptuous, but unpretentious surroundings. We had the duck pie and polenta dishes which were delicious. A real find - will definitely be back to try the chocolate brownies next time!”

Hated

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
