The Lamb Review

The Lamb is featured in these Guides:

What exactly is it that makes a good English pub? This question seemed crucial as my drinking companion and I stood supping at the bar in The Lamb. It’s a Young’s pub, so sells their formidable selection of beers, very well kept, along with all the usual drinks. The food is good, so they tell me, and there’s a pleasant beer garden in the summer. That’s the bare facts, but what is it about the Lamb that makes it so peculiarly likeable?

Is it good management? Sure, that’s a big plus point at The Lamb. The landlord is always around, and seems to inspire his staff. But good management only makes for efficiency and that can’t produce greatness on its own.

How about friendly service? Again, the Lamb scores here. Even when it’s very busy (which is often), the staff will always serve you with a smile, and exchange small talk. But many of the new chain pubs have friendly service but no corresponding vibe. And one of my favourite London pubs, the Prince Regent in Herne Hill, has (or did have the last time I went) one of the most comically miserable and taciturn landlords in the known universe.

Could it be little historical, very ‘English’ eccentricities? Again, The Lamb scores here, by dint of its ‘snob screens’. These are little hatches at roughly head height at the bar, which apparently allowed people to order their drinks anonymously (why?). They are an interesting little feature, but I don’t think the pub would be ruined if they were removed.

And then there are the punters. Now here we might be onto something. Because all pubs are essentially rooms where booze is served. It’s people that put flesh on these bare bones. There’s a mix of people here, young and old, rich and poor, pissed and sober. The public house is defined historically as being for the public, as opposed to the club, which chooses its own homogenous clientele. Many pubs we visit are, in effect, clubs, with the drinkers belonging to the same socio-economic subset and even wearing the same uniform.

So maybe that’s it. A good mix of people. Simple as that. But at the end of the day, (or last orders), maybe there’s an essence to a good pub that simply can’t be described by a review. Because drinking in pubs is about experience. Like reading about acid trips, there’s no substitute for the real thing. So, go along and check it The Lamb. I think you might like it.
