The Eagle Review

The Eagle is featured in these Guides:

Walking into The Eagle in itself brings a good feeling to the thirsty (and often hungry) punters of Farringdon. A spacious wooden pub with delicious cooking aromas wafting from behind the bar – why, it could almost be home…

Running for the last ten years, The Eagle is often a home from home for office workers and media types from the nearby Guardian and Face offices. Mix them with the pre-theatre and pre-club crowds on weekends and you have a lively and interesting mix of people.

As chief chef, Tom explains: “It’s a good honest pub where we don’t talk any rubbish about the food and drink. The way we cook food here is because it’s the way we like doing it. We’ve got a large crowd of regulars in here so we must be doing something right.”

For around £10 you can avail yourself of a wide range of dishes which are definitely more hale and hearty than a great deal of other food served in pubs. There is a daily change of menu with pasta, chunky soups and spicy steak sandwiches (something of a house specialty apparently).

Meal times vary with lunch between 12.30 and 2.30 in the afternoon and dinners from 6.30-10.30, Monday to Friday. Sunday sees dinner served from 12.30 to 3.30.

As a place to relax, to get fed and watered, it’s an ideal spot with a decidedly casual and relaxed feel. The only entertainment comes from daily newspapers, so it may not be for those looking to catch the latest sports action. However, if you like your pub to be free from those distractions, then The Eagle will be right up your street…

Speakng of which, it can be a bit of a walk from Farringdon or Angle tube, but it is worth the effort, especially if you feel you need recharging for some of the more lively nightspots around Clerkenwell Road or Turnmills Street.

All in all The Eagle certainly says ‘quality’ and is well worth a visit. Who knows? You might even end up becoming one of the regulars… more

“Arrived at Sunday afternoon thinking food finished, oh no. What a delightful meal we had. Poached smoked haddock, spinach with garlic and chillies, topped off with a boiled egg, truly tasty. Me lady had cous cous with grilled aubergine, that too was a taste sensation. A couple of Leffe's later ding dong. I can't fault this place.”

“A party of five of us went there Wed evening last week. Great atmosphere, superb food and excellent wine but the attitude of the management is definitely once we got your cash get out. The more people they can get thru - the happier they are. The place was extremely packed and they can't really cope with large numbers of eaters. Food full marks but service zero”

“We stumbled upon the Eagle by chance on our way to another restaurant. Decided to chop a couple of pints before moving on but we enjoyed it so much we stayed until closing! The Eagle has a great atmosphere, its relaxed and chilled out, no poseurs or pretentious twats. The food was fantastic - one of the best pub meals I''ve had in years. The service was fast and friendly also. Although I would stick to beers, wines, or shorts, as the cocktails we ordered were rubbish, but that didn''t detract from our night and we reverted to pints!! All in all, I highly recommend this place.”

“Went there last Friday and it was great. Had scallops and they were plentiful, still rare (best), v juicy and extremely tasty! Atmosphere pretty laid back and there was lots of room and not too packed.”
