The Cellar Review

“If you like the wine, then it’s a good wine,” says Caroline O’Brien, assistant manager at The Cellar Wine Bar in Moorgate, summarizing the outlook at the dark but friendly venue.

Decorated with chunky wooden benches, vintage lamp shades and small chrome tables there is a slight suggestion of Asian minimalism that adds mystery to this sexy wine bar. The cavernous atmosphere and light background music provide for great after work conversation.

At first, The Cellar could come off as slightly intimidating, however one word with a staff member you are immediately at ease. There’s no doubt that this place is relaxing.

The Cellar offers eighty wines, with forty five available by the glass. Whether you are a connoisseur of fine French vintages or a late night offie regular, The Cellar team strive to find the bottle or glass that perfectly suits your taste. Tasting is encouraged and impromptu lessons are offered for the inexperienced.

In addition to the great wines and charming atmosphere, the Cellar’s menu offers a selection of gourmet sandwiches, crisp salads and bite platters to munch on. Ambience lightens up in the day when The Cellar opens to offer quality lunches with a faster paced vibe. We couldn’t get enough of the roast fennel and sun dried tomato salad, decorated with pumpkin seeds and a sesame/lime dressing, it’s a healthy and delicious choice. The Dutch Gouda sandwich made us go ‘mmmm’; although it might not be there when you go because the menu is altered each week to keep things diverse.

The Cellar is open from Monday to Friday for lunch until 11pm. Saturday’s are open for private hire only. Thursdays are the big night when regulars can’t wait until the weekend to wile out wine. Pricing reflects the quality of the food and service, which we found flawless.

“The Cellar was almost empty for my visit and no surprise given the poor value of the food. £6 or £7 for a hunk of bread with a hint of chicken filling and £3.50 for a bowl of greasy skinny oven chips. Not a patch on how I remember it from a year or so back.”

“I went to Cellar with a group not really knowing what to expect, however we had a brilliant time. We got some free drink and a good time was had by all. The only thing was that the selection on Reggae music was limited but i will go again.”

“This is a lovely venue although more chilly than chilled-out due to over-zealous air-conditioning. I was very disappointed with the selection of wines by the glass. In fact, there is only one very basic french red wine offered and a small glass costs the same as the price of the bottle. The service is very poor - the plates are cleared before the meal is finished - and, although only optional, the service charge is conveniently added and, if I understand correctly, further gratuities welcomed. Having said all this, the food is delicious, even if the re-heating of the dishes is a little haphazard. I wasn't sure if today's lamb dish was meant to be served warm, cold or tepid as it was actually a mix of all 3 but it was very tasty.”

“Fantastic, fun, chilled out and just plain special. Great food, very good wine list and to top it off really lovely, very knowledgeable and genuine staff who make The Cellar a stand-out inner city gem.”

“This place wins hands down for me, best bar in the area, really chilled out with no loud music. The staff are the nicest people ever and go out of their way to make you feel at home and make sure you have a good night. There’s even a private room for couples, when you’re entertaining that special lady! Definitely worth a visit. And the food is really groovy, cheese boards and good bread with olive oil and vinegar 'fantastico'.”
