The Angel Review
Top 10 things you need to know about The Angel pub:
1) It is an unpretentious pub located a stone’s throw from the Old Street Silicon Roundabout. The subtle smell of paint tells you that it has been refurbished recently.
2) During the day, The Angel is mainly a chaps’ pub. They take pint breaks and talk business along the spacious lounge area or by the circular bar.
3) It is split over two floors and they have standing and sitting areas. If you forget the pub’s name, look at the walls for clues which are covered with vintage film posters containing the word Angel.
4) Are you a tapas fan? If so check The Angel’s revamped food and drink offering. They’ve recently introduced a successful small plates menu: five for under £20. The size is reasonable for London standards and most of the tapas are Spanish inspired. Highlights include Padron peppers, pan-fried chorizo with sourdough bread, salt and pepper squid and pulled pork mini burgers.
5) Main dishes are a collection of pub classics, from fish and chips to rump steak, and clientele’s favourites include sausages and mash or the fish finger bap. It is worth asking the friendly staff for offers, especially at lunchtime.
6) If you always end up going for the burger, don’t be disappointed, there is room for innovation. You can build your own by picking the meat and toppings for your bun.
7) In the evening the atmosphere is loud yet relaxed. There is a mixed crowd, locals and suited-up city workers, sipping drinks or sitting chatting over comfort food.
8) If you plan to eat and have a conversation, the lounge area might be too loud, so check out the hidden skylight-covered room on the second floor for some quietness.
9) You have more than 20 beers, ales and ciders to choose from, ranging from small local cask brewers, to craft masters and international names. Beers include London Pride or Beachcomber Blonde. They have a seasonal tap that changes through the year as well as homemade tipples.
10) The Angel is a decent pub with fair prices, down-to-earth food and, most importantly, considering how scarce pubs are in the area, a life-saving location....read more
