Smiths of Smithfield (SOS) Dining Room Review
Book a table at Smiths of Smithfield (SOS) Dining Room
The two words huge and industrial come to mind. This is as urban as its going to get - ok maybe not but Smiths of Smithfield is saying we’re on the edge, modern and above all 'Kewl'.
This place is pretty busy during the week and with a selection of floors you are pretty spoilt for choice menu wise. Serving a vast selection of alco drinks and food ranging from pub snacks to restaurant food; the best way to work off all those alcohol, and munch induced calories is by checking out all four floors- yep work those stairs! But if you are insisting on keeping those extra few pounds then use the lift.
The spacious ground floor carries mainly beers with huge lounging brown leather sofas and great communal style benches. The first floor has a more intimate design with a champagne cocktail bar, and the second floor is a rather pricey restaurant. The third and final floor is currently being refurbished which will cater for private hire.
On the weekend beware!! Smiths of Smithfields gets extremely busy - before entering the pub of sardine’s ooops I mean people! You’ve got to get past the intimidating bouncers who like to play power games like making you wait for no apparent reason in undesirable weather.

“Decided to take a friend out for a meal and was out to impress, so selected Top Floor at SOS on the basis of strong recommendations from friends and colleagues.
The service was excellent. I cannot stress enough how good the staff were; Friendly, attentive, polite, helpful... these people went out of their way to make us feel comfortable.
The food was superb. I had the halibut with lobster mash, which was beautifully presented and very tasty. I had the pastel de nata with raspberries for dessert which, as someone who has consumed a lot of egg custard tarts in their life, was *perfect*. Everyone remembers this place for the view, and even with a seat from the back of the room it's quite something.
Wine on the top floor is expensive, but like everything else on the top floor - you get what you pay for. The total was just over £100 for two of us (two courses, dessert, bottle of wine and coffee), which, for a premiere resteraunt in central London, was pretty much expected.
****Highly recommended****
(A warning - the bread comes with no bread plate. It's 'rustic' apparently. The uptight might find the prospect of holding a bit of crusty bread frightening. It's OK to drop crumbs. Really. Your mum isn't watching.)”

“My son booked this as a treat for us and I have never been so disappointed. The plates were cold. The food was boring and the chips tasted like Aunt Bessie's. My husband had what was supposed to be a 10 oz steak which was nothing like 10 oz. I had the Mini Sliders which were tasteless. We had cheese and biscuits for £7.50 and got 25p worth of dried up cheese. My daughter had Tiramisu which was heavy and very supermarket standard. There was no loo paper in any of the ladies toilets the windows were absolutely filthy. I am amazed that John Torode thinks he can judge other chefs when he is producing such rubbish himself.”

“Perfect for early morning breakfast meetings. Good, hearty eggs and coffee to get you going in the morning. We were there the other day and we saw owner John Torode hanging about. Great open plan decor to.”

“Great breakfast served at this london city bar in the heart of Smithfields! Place was buzzing at 8am and although quietened after 9.30ish still remained a chilled place to be. Wi-fi to which was useful, if a tad slow....”

“We ate in the 3rd floor restaurant. The fodd was excellent but the service was terrible, inattentive, brusque and patronising. At one point the waiter tipped the remnants of my friends previous glass into the glass from the new bottle - outrageous! we had to get up and walk over to the bar to eventually get out bill. What a shame when the food is so good - I would not go back”

“Smiths is still a favourite of mine. Gets busy with the after work crowd and the buzz is good. Perfect starting place for more venues later.”

“Beware of the table service in the cocktail bar, especially if you're onto your second or third drink: Because you can't see them mix it, the bar staff seem to think that they don't need to use any alcohol. Pretty cheeky, at £7 a pop. The waitress grudgingly took them back, to which the chap behind the bar gave us a look that illustrated his irritation that we'd noticed he'd scammed us, rather than expressing any surprise or apology.
Sadly, the music policy was equally disappointing: although all 4/4-based (good), the tempo, mood, and style had no structure, nor any hit of an overall direction, and consecutive tunes often jarred. (one minute techno, the next disco? This is not what good warm-ups are made from.) It sounded like an aged jukebox was randomly selecting from a stock of hundreds of "best of dance" albums. Suddenly makes you realize the importance of a well crafted background soundtrack: when the tunes were silky and groovy, as one might expect for this kind of venue, the vibe noticeably picked up, but instantly fell as the next tune came in.
And, expecting there to be massive crowds on a Saturday night, we even arrived early. But at 9pm, there were still plenty of tables around. Even the booths in the cocktail bar regularly became free. Hardly surprising, really...”
