Silk & Grain Review

Top 10 things to know about Silk & Grain:

1) After-work drinks, and steak for dinner, with smooth access to the Night Tube? Eschew the traditional restaurants and corporate bars nearby. Think big and drink different at this hidden gem restaurant and bar near Liverpool Street and Bank.

2) This isn’t your usual restaurant and bar. The food and drinks menus are an explosive concoction of science and playfulness. The restaurant's alter piece: the fiery Josper grill. The bar: one of the few in London to specialise in the fine art of cocktail ageing.

3) What happens if natural leather is infused with Scotch? What if a cosmopolitan is left to rest in a glass bottle for a while? Taste the round finish a negroni acquires when combined with the flavours of caramel and vanilla from oak-aged barrels. Be adventurous, try the bar’s own mixes, combining aged cocktails with other ingredients: cocktails within cocktails!

4) Follow the recommendations of the staff for the best tasting experience. Ask for a tour of the secret vault in the basement. If you’re not a cocktail person, order a pint of excellent Innis & Gunn, an award-winning oak-aged beer with a refined hint of whisky.

5) If drinks are the star of the show, the food is a remarkable supporting act. Six Maldon Oysters with lemon, Tabasco and aged mignonette to start? Hello there!

6) Succulent, juicy cuts of meat, as varied as the appetites they satisfy, the top-notch steaks - dry aged Tweed Valley Scottish beef - find their ideal veggie sidekicks in the sweet potato fries with caramel salt and creamed spinach.

7) Further food options are equally intense and meaty. The Monday Steak vs Burger menu (including a bottle of wine) is a real deal for just £20!

8) Silk and Grain’s airy dining room and quirky bar are available for hire on weekends, with an impressive offer of catering options, for birthday parties, wedding receptions and other celebrations.

9) Good news: all this experimentation and quality doesn’t break the bank. The drinks’ prices are well below the City’s average.

10) You’ve got nine good reasons above to give your food and drinks choices an exciting twist at Silk and Grain. This isn’t a place just for ties and suites, it’s for unbuttoned conventions and alcoholic discovery. more

“Have dined here on a number of occasions now ... perfect on every occasion whether it be for the business lunch or dinner out with the girlfriend later in the evening. Bar offering is fun, but the steak is what it's all about ... fine cuts and great meat, Scottish beef. Interesting thing was as we dined the waitress told us the venue was available to hire at weekends too and at very good value rates, so have actually booked now to hold my 30th there. Can't wait.”

Silk & Grain Food Menu

Our steak has been carefully selected from St Boswells Livestock Market from farms only in the Tweed Valley. This makes them so much finer than just being Scottish beef. This beef falls into the top 1% of Scottish beef & has the care in its handling to be world class. We complete the journey to plate by cooking your steak in a specialist Josper oven. This is a charcoal burning oven that reaches temperatures of 900 degrees. this produces tender & smoky steaks that have not lost their moisture.

Silk & Grain Drinks Menu

Here at Silk & Grain we like to do things a little differently, and take a bit of extra time and care when it comes to our tasty beverages.
We've taken a selection of our fave classic cocktails, and had a little looksy at what happens if we give them some time in different ‘things’ such as oak barrels, metal, leather and glass. Cocktails, which have tasted the same for years such as a Negroni or a Hanky Panky have developed a new lease of life through the process. Also, craft beers and wines.

Item Description Price
Ochagavia Sauvignon Blanc Chile £ 26.00
Moon Harvest Chardonnay Australia £ 28.00
Leather Penicillin This New York classic combines Scotch, ginger, honeyand lemon. Add a dose of our leather-infused single malt and it’ll whip you into shape. £ 9.00
Bottled Conditioned Cosmo Letting the usual combination of vodka, Cointreau, lime and cranberry juice rest in a glass bottle for a period of time gave us a silky smoothness that’s an undeniable improvement on this 80s classic. £ 8.50
Barrel Aged Moscow Mule The drink that kick-started the vodka boom is given a kick from our house made ginger syrup. We give the vodka a fighting chance with time in a barrel, and add a dash of aged bitters for good measure. £ 8.50
Barrel Aged Negroni The cocktail that re-lit the barrel ageing phenomenon. We’ve taken the edge off this perfecttrilogy of gin, sweet vermouth and Campari with a bout in a heavily charred barrel. £ 9.00
Metal Martini A serious Martini for vodka lovers that we’ve sentenced to hard time in steel. This one has paid its dues. Ketel One, dry vermouth, Dr. Elmegirab’s Spanish Bitters - rested in steel. £ 8.50
Barrel Aged Elle Presidente With a spot of barrel ageing this Cuban classic is given a soft touch. It’s beautiful. Bacardi Superior, dry vermouth, Cointreau, pomegranate syrup - aged in a barrel £ 8.50
Barrel Aged Manhattan This old school classic is perfectly suited to the effects of barrel ageing, giving it great depth and character like a proper old boy. Rye whisky, Martini Rosso, Angostura bitters - aged in a barrel £ 9.00
City Orchard One thing the City lacks is green, so we thoughtwe’d grow our own orchard in the form of this long fruity refresher. Our barrel-aged Bacardi cocktail is shaken up with pear liqueur, lime and apple. £ 9.00
Carney's Brew Mr. Carney might like this solid Whisky Sour,to which we have given a gingery kick, a lick of lemon and a float of Innis & Gunn Oak Aged beer. Cheers mate! £ 8.50
Silk Street Sparkler The ancient silk industry helped to shape modern day London and Spitalfields was known as ‘weaver’s town’. We’ve carefully weaved flavours of pomegranate, ginger and rhubarb together into something £ 5.25
Baby Brew The baby brother to our Carney’s Brew, this frothy non-alcoholic version tastes intriguingly like a fruit beer. Knock this one back and stay sharp. Pineapple, raspberry, lemon, honey & malt £ 5.25
Innis & Gunn Oak Aged Beer Innis & Gunn beer oak aged in a whisky barrel to add sweetness and depth £ 6.50

"Dreadful pub, run by people who have zero idea about hospitality or running a pub. Upon arrival we sat in the back garden that only had one other table occupied , when we tried to order off the lunch menu..." Which venue is this?
