Brick Lane in South East London, is a renowned hotspot for welcoming curry houses, fluorescent lighting and pushy PR touts offering attractive discounts. With so many different restaurants each offering its own unique quality, it can be hard to determine which venues actually serve genuinely good Indian cuisine.
Situated at the far end of Brick Lane sits ‘Papadoms’, a small restaurant which lured me in with the promise of excellent Indian cuisine, stylish interiors and a persuasive 25% discount on all food. The restaurant itself was vibrant and modern with colourful artwork on display. Table clothes were crisp white and the high back chairs were upholstered in creamy leather. The cheerful Indian music played at pleasant volume and was perfect for the setting.
I was offered a table which was unfortunately sat next to a laundry basket that had napkins strewn around it rather than in it. I tried to order a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc but was informed that there was no wine on the menu apart from their house white. Fortunately this turned out to be an Italian Pinot Grigio.
The menu offered the typical Indian selections with a few of Papadoms own so-called specialities. I ordered my favourite dish, Chicken Bhuna, a flavoursome medium-hot curry cooked with onions, tomatoes and spices. When my meal arrived I was less than satisfied with the portion size, I counted around 5 chunks of chicken and when I say ‘chunks’ I feel I am being a little over generous. The sauce, rather than a tasty tomato mix was a strange brown concoction which was extremely bland and included shredded carrots! Now I am no curry expert, but I have never once tried a Bhuna curry which included such an ingredient and neither do I wish to try one again. The naan, a tandoor oven-backed flat bread, was not only doughy and tasteless but also rather shy in size. The pilau rice was standard and the only bonus to this disappointing excuse for Indian restaurant was the yogurt and mint sauce which came with the papadom starter.
Unfortunately Papadoms has a sever lack of culinary knowledge when it comes to Indian cuisine and relies on its vibey interiors and tempting discounts to lure in unsuspecting victims....read more

“Took the traditional stroll down Brick Lane, spying menus and seeing who'd offer us the best deals. At this decadent curry house we were offered free papadoms, a bottle of wine (between 2) and 25% off the bill. Blimey. Not only was the deal delivered with grace but so were our scorchingly hot madras and vindaloo dishes. Just the was that curry should be. And tender! Wow! Certainly will go back here! My newest favourite curry house in rick Lane”
