Murphis Karaoke Bar & Restaurant Review

From private K-TV rooms in China where skateboarders crooned Taiwanese love ballads to the Dun A Ri bar in Kings’ Cross where belting out Summer of ’69 with a fat middle aged chav felt like the right thing to do – my experience with karaoke has been diverse. So naturally, I was curious to see what Murphi’s in Farringdon had to offer in terms of quirk.

Upon arrival we are greeted by the lovely Nolley Adam – the Thai chef and karaoke master, whose bubbly enthusiasm adds to the bar’s charm. Murphi, himself who introduces us, explains the plans for the next month – they will open a sushi, Mexican and Thai restaurant upstairs, and move the karaoke down to the lounge styled lower level.

The bar is brilliantly situated – steps from Farringdon station, across the road from Turnmills - making Murphi’s the ideal pop-in spot for little sing song after too many pints with the colleagues, or your ladies on a wild girls’ night out.

The bar features iconic American artwork and serves your typical poisons. Our neighbours drowned themselves in Moët and sang Christina Aguilera tunes like overdoing it was going out of style. We happily stuck to our vodka sodas mixed and served by the friendly and accommodating barmaids.

The word karaoke comes from the Japanese ‘empty’ and ‘orchestra’ and emerged in the eighties as a way for business men let loose after a hard day of dealing. There was nothing empty about Murphi’s pub on our Friday evening – however everyone was certainly letting loose, which is exactly what this highly unpretentious, merry bar seems to be designed for.

“A large group went here for a colleagues leaving doo, and I have to say it was possibly one of the worst places I have ever been to. The drinks were hugely over priced and changed everytime we went up to the bar. The food was again a waste of money, as a group of 20 we ordered enough for everyone or so we thought, when it came up there was hardly any food on the plate! Finally the atmosphere was dull, not lively at all. Overall a waste of money and a rubbish night, we left after just over 1 hour. I would not recommend anyone to go here if you are looking for a good night.”

“Horrid place and nothing like the review. Absolute dive and the barstaff are hideous and not welcoming at all! It is not a place to go for fun as this is apparently banned!!! take my advice and avoid this place!!!!”

“An unplanned night out with colleagues was made worthwhile by the warmth atmosphere of this well located prestigious karaoke bar and night club, the Murphis karaoke bar and night club situated some few metres from farringdon station. I'm really not a good singer but I was tempted to be part of the most recent, eye catching computerized touch screen karaoke system which makes Murphis to be far ahead in the karaoke world. We were personally impressed with the services and the friendly atmosphere created by both staffs and customers hereby making Murphis the right venue for them fly days.”

“I cannot think of a better place to go for a crazy night of drunken singing. This place totally rocks!!”

“This club was absoloutly awful. We went as a large group, getting in was awful the bouncers drooled over us and wouldn't let us pass for a good five minutes trying to make small talk, leaving us standing in the cold, the club itself has a dirty interior nothing to show for itself but a tiny dancefloor that one of my friends fell over as the lino was coming up at the edge, we spent about half an hour trying to get a drink but the bar man was too busy trying to talk to a women at the other end of the bar leaving us drinkless and bored. The same songs played countless times. When we did finally get served the drinks were expensive and watered down - sambucca was sippable. The toilets were horrible broken and dirty with no locks and one of my friends was approached quite fourcefully out side when coming out. Over all i would not recommend this club at all, if anything stay well away and if you do decide to go for the "chique filth with a hint of dancehall kareoke" take some latex gloves, and a friend to go to the toilet with.”

“If only i could give a minus rating. The service was extremely poor the bar staff downstairs don't know what they are doing. It's as if they've never worked behind a bar before - waited 15 mins to get served at the bar, there were only 20 people in the place. If you want food i would suggest you eat elsewhere beforehand, the food was substandard. Girls, if you must use the toilets take a friend to make sure the door stays shut as there aren't any locks on the doors, also they can stand in front of the large hole in the side of the toilet to protect your modesty. Whatever you do don't lean of any of the wooden banisters you're liable come crashing down with a thud. All in all a big disappointment of a night that was supposed to be a birthday celebration. I definitely won't be going back, if you to enjoy a nightout singing karaoke i suggest songstar for the playstation and not this place.”

“Booked Murphis for a corporate event and initally the staff were helpful. Then a week before they claimed to have lost my booking after I paid a deposit. Then asked me if I could check if the deposit went through - great customer service! Ordered food for the night for 40 people. The portions wouldnt have served 40 primary school children. Then when my bar tab hit £1500 I found I had been ridiculously over charged. How they thought 35 people could drink 350 beers in 2 hours I will never know. They offered me a £500 refund immediately so they obviously knew this was incorrect. I am still fighting for more! Added to the smell and taped up chairs in the bar - a very disappointing venue. Not recommended at all!”

“Well I thought it was bloody hilarious! We went on a Wednesday, it was totally dead but we had a whail of a time hogging the mic, and had a total love affair with the background screen - picturesque landscapes and crabs graciously moving across the sand HA HA HA I can't wait to go back!”

“I was very disappointed with my night at Murphis. I was expecting it to be better than the average pub karaoke but it just felt like I was in someones house at a really bad party. The sound sytem was awful with what I can only describe as pan pipe music to every song and the choice of songs were poor. This place could be so good but I think the management aren't making the most of it. I won't be returning.”

“So bad! If you're like me and fancy a little sing song to Girls Aloud/Sugarbabes something a little cheesy and fun - do not go here!!!! This place is shocking the song list is the worst i have seen in my life, you have to pay £4 entry, the drinks are overpriced and the bar staff in my opinion are useless! I know there is no such thing as a good karaoke bar (as my boyfriend keeps telling me!) but i don't see why not? It can be fun but not here it is skanky, old fashioned and definitely not worth a visit.”

“I had a ball of a time. We celebrated my birthday at Zyrus and found it difficult to leave at the end of the night. Will definitely go back. Read the review and must say I find the bar staff most competent and friendly. There's one barman who makes a killer Mai Tai, unfortunately he could not mend my hangover the next morning.”
