Mac & Wild City Review

Book a table at Mac & Wild City

Top 10 things to know about Mac & Wild:

1) A Scottish bar and restaurant near Liverpool Street is always likely to be a masculine experience. Of course, lassies enjoy the thrill just as much as laddies, but expect dim lights, rough edges and muscular flavours.

2) Brick, leather, wood, tile and mirror amplify the loud braying of menfolk tucking into heartburn inducing libations and plates of hunted meat. Meanwhile, Stevie Wonder and A Tribe Called Quest attempt to mellow the scene from the distant music speakers.

3) If Phil is on duty, she (yes, a lady) will momentarily sit and guide you through a number of recommendations. Exchange pleasantries and adopt an adventurous tone as she may suggest an off-menu Californian pinot noir called The Crusher, which you should definitely not refuse. The wine list is greased towards bankers wielding company credit cards; bottles beat by-the-glass, evidently.

4) Arrive early as the menu is prone to selling out of roasted bone marrow and heritage cauliflower.

5) Begin your hearty Scottish feed with moreish haggis pops and supreme Scotch eggs.

6) Then, cast an eye over the venison and beef chateaubriands, published by weight for all to see on the chalk board of dreams. Salivate briefly and order quickly, before they’re all gone; 400 grams of venison to share: leaner, wilder, and better value for money. The crisp, blackened exterior reveals a pink centre that provokes your own private moment of shut-eyed ecstasy. The accompanying cast iron pot of haggis mac & cheese is an earthy, truffled sequel.

7) There is really only one choice for dessert: sticky toffee pudding with Compass Box Orangerie whisky. Suddenly, your internal monologue transports you to a remote corner of the Scottish mountains.

8) Mac & Wild is also one of the best whisky bars in London. Whisky flights take off from Speyside, The Highlands, The Lowlands, Campbeltown and Islay, and land in more than 100 whiskies.

9) Alternatively, pander to your yearning for alfresco beer garden action, where 2-4-1 offers on craft beer and prosecco never disappear (praise be to the all-weather roof keeping it open all year round).

10) Mac & Wild’s tractor-shed-cum-urban-warehouse is a place to kick back, eat like a bear, and bob your head to some laid-back funk and soul, maaaaan. It has the rugged, casual, Hawksmoor type vibes that put you in the good time mood for a Friday night out in Shoreditch.
