Humble Grape - Fleet Street Review
Book a table at Humble Grape - Fleet Street
Top 10 things to know about Humble Grape Fleet Street:
1) London is all hand-crafted beers, locally distilled gin, and barrel-aged cocktails. So where can the old-fashioned wine lovers turn to? Humble Grape is a tempting option.
2) You wouldn’t expect to find it here – a London wine bar hidden down a cobbled lane off Fleet Street, surrounded by old-time pubs. But that’s a real thing, not a wine-withdrawal mirage, so step through the unassuming door to discover a vast space, with cork covered walls and an impressive bottle showcase.
3) It’s immediately clear you’ve entered a wine-lover’s paradise, and quite a special one. Humble Grape carefully selects their bottles from excellent producers, like your wine-connoisseur friend would do for you– but on a larger scale.
4) With more than 30 wines by the glass and 300 by the bottle to choose from, you might feel a bit lost and think you’d really need that wine-connoisseur friend to counsel you.
5) Truth is – you don’t need one. The staff are friendly enough to make you feel at home. Follow their advice, and you won’t mistake your Chardonnay from your Pinot.
6) In such a wine temple, it’s no surprise the food comes second. You select your fare so that it matches your drink and not the other way round.
7) Choose between a list of small plates, go for a charcuterie platter, or try one of the larger dishes to be shared by the table. Wine-sipping goes incredibly well with food-nibbling.
8) Some remarkable highlights from the food menu include fresh scallops with chorizo and fennel, and a melt-in-your-mouth burrata with flaked almonds. As for variety, there’s some space for improvement: the sharing platters are a repetition of the small plates, so be careful when you order, or you might end up with one too many pork meatballs (real-world problems).
9) You have to accept the fact that you might spend £40 per head and still feel hungry at the end of the evening. Hungry but pleasantly tipsy. In the reign of wine bars, fullness is underrated.
10) Humble Grape is one of the friendliest and most down-to-earth wine bars you’ll find in London. There’s no space for useless sophistication here. Join in the celebration of all things white, red and bubbles, and learn something new at the weekly workshops and classes....read more
