Fields Bar & Kitchen Review
Top 10 things we discovered about Fields Bar and Kitchen when we visited:
1) Fields Bar and Kitchen is owned by Benugo, the restaurant chain that also has outposts in the statuesque British Museum and iconic Natural History Museum, amongst others.
2) While Benugo’s other cafes and restaurants may be situated within the bowels of ancient tourist attractions, Fields Bar and Kitchen is slap bang in the middle of a wide open space – Lincoln’s Inn Fields in the City of London, to be exact – surrounded by greenery and sweaty people knocking balls over tennis nets.
3) Get there before 7.30pm if you want to eat. The kitchen shuts sharply soon after this time, so don’t do what we did and arrive at 7pm, order main courses with the idea of ordering dessert afterwards, and then end up disappointed.
4) There’s no better feeling than sipping on a glass of Prosecco while watching other people exercise. Why, it’s good for the soul! Fields Bar and Kitchen is perfectly placed on the edge of a tennis court so you can do just that – and if the carb-guilt catches up with you, then a quick jog around the park will make you feel heaps better.
5) A small selection of wood-fired pizzas, salads, and a couple of meat dishes make up the simple menu. I’m of the opinion that small menus should equate to good food...
6) ...but, my blue cheese and asparagus pizza had a soggy base. Strike one.
7) The blue cheese hadn’t melted, like it should, and was less gloopy and luxuriant and more cold and jelly-like. Strike two.
8) Our sides of rocket and parmesan salad and fries were just as disappointing – the salad was undressed, the rocket too bitter, and the fries were undercooked and under-seasoned. Strike three.
9) The underwhelming food at Fields Bar and Kitchen is never going to blow anyone away. While the restaurant gets points for location – so much green and in the middle of London, only a trot away from Holborn Station and the buzz of inner-city life – the food left me feeling wistful for the pizzas at Homeslice in Covent Garden or Pizza East in Shoreditch.
10) And I wasn’t even able to have dessert. Fields Bar and Kitchen, you’re out! ...read more
