Ekachai Review

Top 10 things you should know about Ekachai restaurant:

1) Casual Asian, street-style dining – with a particular focus on Thai, Malay and Cantonese dishes – is what Ekachai is famed for. Jack of all trades, master of none? Absolutely not.

2) The Liverpool Street branch – which I was fortunate enough to visit – is one three in London: the others are based in Wandsworth and Selfridges on Oxford Street.

3) The chain is owned by Hong Kong born and raised Thomas Tjong and Sidney Tsang. Together, the pair have run more than 30 successful restaurants and were responsible for bringing one of the first noodle bars to the UK. So it’s fair to say that they know what they’re doing.

4) The restaurants are designed with high-turnover in mind; this isn’t really somewhere you’ll linger long after your meal. Think an up-market Wagamama – large, airy and well-lit spaces filled with long, chunky benches and a spiral staircase made from reclaimed bamboo.

5) The starters comprise ‘little plates’, perfect for sharing, if you dare, and range from satay to duck spring rolls and sumptuous-sounding salads. On the night we visited, we opted for delicately-flavoured Thai fish cakes as well as prawn and crab dumplings, which were quite simply, divine.

6) Mains include rice and noodle dishes, soups, stir fries and curries, all of which come in plentiful portions, yet are surprisingly easy on the wallet: the most you’re likely to pay for a main is £9.50.

7) My father, who has resided in South East Asia for well over a decade now, dined on Malaysia’s favourite dish, nasi goreng (wok fried rice, meat and veg, topped with a fried egg) and was suitably impressed – which I assure you is no mean feat. I, meanwhile, filled my boots with a delicious Malaysian chicken kapitan: tender chicken in a hearty curry packed with chilli, lemongrass, kafir lime, coconut and just the right amount of oomph.

8) Drinks range from traditional Asian beverages (from Jasmine tea to sweet Thai coffees) to juices, cocktails and a handful of decently priced wines.

9) The staff were somewhat on the timid side on the night that I visited, but were polite and attentive nevertheless.

10) Truthfully, I’m not usually a huge fan of chain restaurants, but Ekachai, with its cheap, cheerful and tasty ethos, bucks the trend. I’ll certainly return.
