Eastway Review

Book a table at Eastway

It’s probably not best practice to start a review with the word ‘pork’ twice in the opening paragraph, but there’s an exception to every rule. Free-range slow braised pork is Eastway’s signature dish and the reason you must visit this restaurant.

Eastway is part of Liverpool Street’s swanky Andaz hotel, and there are four other eateries to choose from which vary from posh to oriental to glamorous to casual. If you were describing a certain girl band, Eastway would be the non-sexy laid-back member of the group who you’d imagine being mates with.

It’s got a contemporary, minimalistic feel to its layout, which is fairly forgettable – minus the incredibly long bar that takes up half the room. Busy with suits at breakfast and lunch, then a varied, slightly more informal and less rushed crowd for dinner. Waiting staff are friendly and efficient, experts in pleasing people who expect quality sustenance quickly.

The food is great; small on choice but big on taste. An a la carte breakfast menu which changes into lunch/dinner when the time is right – offering tasty pasta options, sophisticated sandwiches, homemade soup and tapas as a lighter bite for reasonable prices. The menu changes every couple of weeks, but there is always one dish that stays, yes, you’ve guessed it…

The free range pork slowly braised and served with mashed potatoes and caper vinaigrette. A meal so delicious that the weary chef gets pulled out of the kitchen an average of seven times daily to inform diners that he can’t reveal the secret recipe. He will only tell you three key pieces of information: 1) the meat is a collar cut 2) the pig is provided from the same farmer that supplies livestock to Waitrose 3) It is cooked for 2.5 hours. It’s the softest, most succulent piece of pork that you’ll ever get your lucky chops around. And if you’re a vegetarian? Get the dish anyway as even the mash alone is amazing.

What else? Quality wine, nice cocktails and a variety of beer – well, it’s the least you could expect considering the size of the bar. A buzzing atmosphere and smart service, oh, and did we mention the pork?

“Good food and fast service. Was a nice place to catch up with friends. The 3-course menu for £15 was good value. The place does not look as classy as on the picture and is a little noisy, but I felt happy at the end anyway!”

“The brasserie style is a little noisy but service is fast and the food is excellent value for 3 courses for £15. The starter halloumi salad was generous but the accompanying vegetables were a little on the limp and soggy side. Main and dessert were great. Fun to wander around the Andaz hotel as you get lost on the way to the bathroom.”

“Myself and 4 friends took advantage of a 3-course £15 fixed price menu when we booked here on Fluid London and we were very impressed with the results. My asparagus and parma ham starter was fresh, my sea bream was balanced out beautifully by some cauliflower cheese, and the pistachio nut dessert was not overly gluttonous. I felt just full enough. The service was quick too so as Eastway is right next to Liverpool Street station we were able to get home and dry before 9pm. Nice work Eastway and Fluid London!”
