Dokke Review

Top 10 things to know about Dokke:

1) Located in St Katherine’s Dock (central London’s only marina, right next to Tower Bridge and the Tower of London), Dokke have snagged a seriously nice location. Away from the chains and the bustle, this small gem of a riverside restaurant sits calmly among the yachts and pleasure boats. Appropriately named Dokke – pronounced “dok”, but affectionately known as “Dockey” by the locals – comes from the old English.

2) Nice and cosy when the rain is lashing down, it must also be stunning at the height of summer. If the sun is out, make a beeline for the waterside seats outside; go alfresco. Watch out though – Dokke doesn’t have a license to serve booze without food after 7pm. Dine early, and treat yourself to a wine with your starter.

3) In keeping with the location, Dokke has a classic, mid-20th century feel. Think white walls and dark wood with smoked glass lampshades in an intimate setting. The vintage chairs next to the floor-to-ceiling windows are a nice touch.

4) If you get the chance and he’s not too busy, make use of the blurred lines between kitchen and table and have a chat with head chef, Neil Wagner. He spent many previous lives as chef to the rich and famous on a string of private islands and luxury resorts, and seems to be enjoying putting those fine cooking skills to use in a more relaxed setting.

5) The menu changes daily, based on available ingredients, and the whims of the chef, but currently has a pan-Asian fusion focus with European/US influences thrown in. Tempura tuna and charcoal bun cauliflower burgers are highlights. Look for freshly foraged produce and exotic Japanese imports.

6) You can tell the kitchen is having fun: the menu is sprinkled with puns and enjoyable novelties. While perhaps a little heavy on the edible flowers, the buzz berries - the flower of the Szechuan plant - at the start of the meal are enjoyably bizarre, making your mouth intensely tingly.

7) The brunch menu (evidenced by some strong Instagram game) looks amazing. The Japanese pancakes with smoked Nutella sound particularly intriguing. Places on the bottomless brunch fill up quickly though, so book ahead.

8) Dokke recommends one starter and one sharing plate per person, but you could happily order 5 or 6 starters between two and treat it like tapas.

9) Unsurprising, given the chef’s strong Asian influences, the drinks menu is host to a fantastic Japanese beer section, and five different sakes.

10) A perfect location for a date in London, Dokke would make a wonderful start or end point for a romantic walk along the Thames.
