Bangalore City Review

Very few places can pull off the word ‘Express’ without being consigned to culinary cul-de-sacs. I generally tend to shun such establishments. Images of hastily prepared slop, thrown before you with a disdainful grunt (even the waiter resents his inferior working environment), which you’re then forced to inhale before being ushered out within twenty minutes to make room for the next unfortunate diner. These things have always deterred me from crossing the threshold of budget eateries.

Still, I try not to let snobbery cloud my judgement. This restaurant is brought to us, after all, by the duo behind Chelsea’s acclaimed The Painted Heron, and its sister venue Bangalore Express Waterloo, which has been a popular venue for over two years.

BE City has only been open two weeks and the word is not quite out there yet; as the empty tables downstairs testify. We went on a Thursday evening, joining the four other customers who received a King’s welcome from the very bored, therefore exceptionally friendly staff. It doesn’t help that the restaurant is tucked away down a laneway off Gracechurch Street, between Bank and Monument stations.

But, the concept is perfect for after-work City diners and I’m sure the place will soon be plying a healthy trade. This is fast Indian food without being fast food, served in hip, sexy surroundings. The red, black and beige geometric patterns, large wooden benches and booths catered for intimate group and couples dining, create an atmosphere of easy sophistication. The affordable fare will no doubt suit bankers feeling the pinch of this quarter’s lost bonus. You can still flash that company card to impress your mates and not regret it the next day. In line with the Wagamama or Ping Pong franchises, the goal here is to deliver decent, ethnic cuisine at affordable prices. What sets Bangalore Express apart from its rivals is the top notch, freshly made food, beautifully presented and bursting with flavour. Organic ingredients are used, where possible.

The menu isn’t region specific; it covers the whole sub-continent. Our meal was kicked off by Poppadoms with garlic, beetroot and mango chutneys; all thick, gooey and thoroughly addictive. There was so much to choose from, we took our time to decide and enjoyed some ‘wine flights’- three 125ml taster glasses of red, white, rose or sparkling. Ranging from between £12 to £18.50, this is a great idea for large groups, undecided on what wine to order. I found the measures slightly uncouth for tasters (I seriously can’t believe I’m complaining about this. Clearly London has curbed my Irish thirst) but for a group, they make sense.

To start, we had onion bhajis with spinach and fresh fenugreek leaves, and chilli paneer cheese on yoghurt cake with red onions. The bhajis were delicious but I found the salad, which accompanied them, overly salted. I don’t generally like the tofu-like texture of paneer cheese, but my boyfriend cleared his plate. For mains, it was monkfish steamed in banana leaf with Bombay potatoes, and a good old-fashioned lamb thali. Great presentation, fantastic flavours, job well done.

The pudding options seemed appealing. I would have liked to have tried kulfi falooda Indian vermicelli in rose milk or saffron rice pudding but ice-cream was about all we had room for, so we plumped for a Bangalore Express Sundae with fresh mango, strawberries, gulab jamun and chocolate. After the success of the savoury courses, this was a disappointment. A confused mix of flavours and textures, there was simply too much going on.

Overall, Bangalore Express is a winner. I do wonder how it will hold up on a packed Friday night as trade starts to pick up. Will the quality of the food, presentation and service still be as good? I’m more than willing to go back and find out.

“I bought a chicken curry and rice to take away and the sauce had far too much salt in it. The actual chicken tasted nice but was spoilt by the salty sauce which accompanied it.”
