All Star Lanes Review

Book a table at All Star Lanes

Bowling proves to be a catalyst for divisionary debate between my friends. Although not quite fanatical, there are those of us who hold a flame for the sport, and, when faced with an empty date in the diary, will happily fill the void with the regressive sounds of pins falling and the smell of shoe-refresher.

Then there are those of us who find the game monotonous, uninteresting and denude of any fun. This inference generally harvests empty diaries, a circumstance more desirable than the ‘predictable bores’ of bowling.

Me, well I think of bowling fondly. This almost certainly has something to do with my favourable feelings towards cult classic, ‘The Big Lebowski’. Anyway, I didn’t need all my friends to love bowling, I only needed one and I had her, and so to quote Walter Sobchak, “F**k it Dude. Let’s go bowling.”

Jeff Lebowski would have approved of the Holborn branch of All Star Lanes. Even he being “a lazy man” would find the motivation to visit such an exciting bowling space. All Star Lanes isn’t simply a few alleys with little or no thought into anything more than a white wash interior, All Star Lanes is about the whole experience.

The venue is consistent in its American theme, and, taking a seat in one of the diner style booths, I notice what covers the greatest percentage of the retro papered wall space: bowling memorabilia.

Well sourced posters, pictures and murals document the world’s love for the sport. To my right, Homer Simpson’s yellow face is screwed in concentration, his animated eyes focusing on the ball attached to his four fingered hand. Covering a large wall, hovering above the words ‘let ‘em roll’, a painted Marilyn Monroe type figure in hotpants, seductively bends over to retrieve a bowling ball. Lebowksi’s face is of course present, framed and worshipped like a God by the patrons; not necessarily old, not necessarily young, not necessarily anything other than people looking to have fun. For Lebowski it was his rug that “really tied the room together”. For All Star Lanes, it’s the memorabilia.

My food arrives, Texas Chilli Con Carne, 2009 UK Chilli Champion Winner. It’s good. I’m no chilli expert, but I don’t question its title. My friend’s char-grilled prime bacon beef burger and fries looks just as delicious despite its lack of awards. A winner in her books, she only breaks from bites to slurp her cocktail; a concoction of Wyborowa vodka, Aperol, passionfruit and fresh apple and lemon going by the name ‘I Love NY’. If we weren’t on the alcohol I’d have attacked the large selection of milkshakes and floats with voracious fervour.

We can’t take the enticing noises from the adjoining bowling alleys anymore; it’s time to ‘let ‘em roll’. The shoes are as expected, standard issue in their vulgarity. I scrunch my nose but as Walter told Smokey, “this is not 'Nam. This is bowling. There are rules.” The shoes stay on.

The names are up on the board; El Duderino and Claire are ready to bowl on lane two of four. My peripherals register my reflection in the wall to ceiling mirrors running the length of the lanes. I look El Ridiculous. Even more so when my ball decides to show its repulsion of the pins by staying clear of them. Luckily there are no spectators at the small seating area of high stools and two tables to the back of the lanes. Still, my shame burns my cheeks a deep red.

Game over (El Duderino’s score shall remain a secret), we switch the bowling shoes for some less conspicuous and ugly: our own. I can hear The Dude’s reproach, “Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.” Sorry Dude, on the shoes, we’ll have to disagree.

If All Star Lanes came with a guarantee it would be this: a good time. For those of you who love to bowl, find space in your diaries for All Star Lanes. Take your bowling-aversed mates along too – they may not appreciate its appeal but if they’re willing to give it a go “the dude abides”. more

“Ten-pin bowling without the annoying kids of the Superbowl in your local shopping centre. This is stylish, adult bowling, with style and decor to match, great tunes, and bloody good nosh too. We had our Xmas party here recently and it was a much more fun way of getting everyone together in a room than just a boring old restaurant meal. And we saw Noel Fielding bowling there too (he's terrible at bowling).”

“Loved, loved, loved, loved, loved All Star Lanes in Holborn. We initially visited with the intent to havec a few drinks and a game of bowling but after salivating from the smells emitting from the kitchen, and seeing the empty plates being cleared from the tables, we decided to eat. Definitely made the right decision and even went for a pud! The venue was equally as good as the food and the atmosphere was incredible, bowling obviously ignites a happy aura! All Star Lanes can count on me to become a regular!”

“Bowling was good, however customer service left a lot to be desired. The people at the front desk got confused, leading to a delay in payment; they told us to sit in the bar whilst it was sorted (they couldn't find the booking). When they found the booking, they marched over with a bouncer (as if we were trying to run off! We hadn't USED the lane yet!). We ordered food to the lane with one waitress, then a waiter came over and was so blunt and rude we thought he was joking, telling us off for ordering food 'when it was clear' his colleague 'wasn't clear on the rules'. Erm, sorry - shouldn't the employee, not the one off visitor, know the rules? Drinks, food and bowling were excellent. We, however, will be going to the nearby Bloomsbury Lanes in future.”

“All star lanes, what a fabulous idea. I had the best friday night for a long time. You have a bar stocked better than most in the West End, great food and all this as well as bowling. If the tacky with bad food and drink reputation of bowling is not to your taste All Star Lanes is perfect for you. The Chanel of the bowling world. LOVE IT!!!!!”

“An upmarket addition to the Bloomsbury bowling scene, All Star Lanes is a cut above the competition. The four full-size lanes have an American-style diner down one side, serving juicy burgers and salads. The bar is a surprise, swathed in red with plenty of space and often the home to a live DJ: cocktails are US-themed, the handiwork of the Worldwide Cocktail Club, and are all properly made, and there's a fine selection of beers. For the munificent or, let's face it, company-sponsored, there's a private room with it's own bar and two more lanes. The only downer is that it's so popular it's hard to get a bowl in here. Book early!”
